15-20%. The higher the number, the more likely it slips away from you. Just set it BEFORE you take the position. Your head will tell you that if it goes to 20% SURELY it must go to 40% or 60% or 80% etc. but it rarely happens that way if you are playing these options on the short term.
LEAPs can have a much higher %.
The main point is to not have your emotions control your selling point. Profit is always profit.
And the other advantage is to set a % and other QUANTITATIVE indicators of when to sell losers.
You will hear eventually that most people lose money because they don't "let their winners ride". But the real money loss comes in from holding onto losers that disregard your thesis. Selling when the number is red before it gets more red takes by FAR the most discipline. Human psychology being what it is we HATE realized (as opposed to unrealized) losses.
