26182946 No.26182946 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with the proof of the transactions being possible by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction if needed.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of the current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs goes higher. Further, the mining network algorithm Random X establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a Monero Chad will be with you shortly.

I love Monero but I can't explain this either. Absolutely destroyed in terms of sats over the past few years. One plausible explanation I've seen is that there is a lot more Monero in circulation than bitcoin, generally attributable to the millions of "lost" bitcoin/those that belong to Satoshi that will never be sold. Monero came into being years later with a more savvy community of early miners that could still be slowly dumping.

The floor for the time being seems to be around 150USD. The Biden presidency will cause many groups to want to come into XMR to escape cancel culture and censorship. Neverminded the fact that you can basically evade taxes and fly under the radar forever. This will create a demand to have cash be converted directly to Monero because all the rich right wing people have normal mom and pop businesses and such as well as the Hispanic communities with their untold amounts of mattress money that is difficult to move. But these people are not usually in the know until people like Alex Jones start talking about it and their buddies at the BBQ. It will likely shoot up to at least 300 by the end of the year if not higher because of the larger criminal communities taking notices and auditing the tech for holes.

Hard to say. Bittrex didn't have a ton of XMR volume and I can't imagine the Australian ones did either.
>Also I can tell you that monero wallets are a pain to work with, endless syncing and the like.
This really only applies to the official wallet, which is actually way better now than even 3 years ago. There are easy to use lite wallets available now that most normies will use anyway. It's a stumbling block but definitely a minor one. The low price vs BTC is probably something else entirely.

Normies I would have never expected are switching to Signal and deleting Instagram and Facebook shit because of the uncontrolled power these stupid apps have on their lives. Yes there are always more secure things but privacy is an evolving battle. People looking for the short term investment into XMR will probably get flushed out but those who hold will be max comfy.

This is precisely the issue. Most people didn't lose their keys like Bitcoin. Also being used for everything from drug sales to tax evasion doesn't help with scarcity. This is why many btc maximalists hate the idea of Bitcoin being passed around on lightning.

Because Monero came way later than Bitcoin it's lunch has been eaten so badly it's like gold where the price is stuck under 2k.

My theory is that when btc reaches 100k XMR will be bought up by the holders of Bitcoin to consolidate their power. The Bitcoin ratio will jump as XMR gets bought up rising to 0.02BTC and likely higher. This is where I will sell. I'll keep 100XMR because I know this is the future. If there is any alt Bitcoin holders find appealing it is XMR.

>How is Monero’s privacy different from other coins?

Monero uses three different privacy technologies: ring signatures, ring confidential transactions (ringCT), and stealth addresses. These hide the sender, amount, and receiver in the transaction, respectively. All transactions on the network are private by mandate; there is no way to accidentally send a transparent transaction. This feature is exclusive to Monero. You do not need to trust anyone else with your privacy.

>How is Monero different from Bitcoin?

Monero is not based on Bitcoin. It is based on the CryptoNote protocol. Bitcoin is a completely transparent system, where people can see exactly how much money is being sent from one user to another. Monero hides this information to protect user privacy in all transactions. It also has a dynamic block size and dynamic fees, an ASIC-resistant proof of work (RandomX), and a Tail Emission, among several other changes.

>What is fungibility, and why is it important?

Fungibility is a simple property of money such that there are no differences between two amounts of the same value. If two people exchanged a 10 and two 5’s, then no one would lose out. However, let’s suppose that everyone knows the 10 was previously used in a ransomware attack. Is the other person still going to make the trade? Probably not, even if the person with the 10 has no connection with the ransomware. This is a problem, since the receiver of money needs to constantly check the money they are receiving to not end up with tainted coins. Monero is fungible, which means people do not need to go through this effort.

>Are Cryptocurrencies 'Super' Tax Havens?

>112 Michigan Law Review First Impressions 38 (2013), 11 Pages Posted: 5 Aug 2013 Last revised: 5 Jul 2015

Abstract

I describe the mechanisms by which cryptocurrencies — a subcategory of virtual currencies — could replace tax havens as the weapon-of-choice for tax-evaders. I argue such outcome is reasonably expected in the foreseeable future due to the contemporary convergence of two processes. The first process is the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies, of which Bitcoin is the most widely recognized example.

The second process is the transformation of financial intermediaries to agents in the service of tax authorities, as part of the fight against offshore tax evasion. Financial institutions are faced with increased governmental pressure to deliver information about account holders, to withhold taxes from earnings accumulating in financial accounts, and to remit such taxes to taxing authorities around the world.

Significantly, cryptocurrencies possess all the traditional characteristics that tax havens do; Earnings are not subject to taxation, and taxpayers’ anonymity is maintained. The operation of cryptocurrencies, however, is not dependent on the existence of financial intermediaries. Thus, cryptocurrencies have the potential of defeating the recent successes of governments in battling offshore tax evasion.

XMR is like a black hole, once your transaction goes in it becomes untraceable. When you swap back into LINK you have essentially given your blockchain history a new identity that can never be traced back to your original LINK history since Monero was the intermediary.

Imho the way that gives you maximum control is to use XMR as an interface to the KYC-government world.
Cash -> KYC-Exchange -> BTC (or XMR directly) -> XMR -> "Non-KYC exchange with wild trading back and forth" -> XMR -> KYC-Exchange -> Cash

The issue is that you can only ever cash out XMR that you bought originally and the remaining profits will have to accumulate in your XMR wallets. However, you could also exchange these to BTC or something else but basically, these coins could never touch the KYC world. Alternatively you could claim to have some sort of XMR mining operation going on that would be the reason why you might cash out more XMR than you originally bought.

The idea is to filter everything through monero. Let’s say you buy some BTC or LINK on an exchange with $USD. You convert it to Monero and send it to an off-exchange Monero wallet. From there you can convert to any currency you want and nobody will know it’s yours. As far as the government can prove, that money is gone from your possession, untraceable. They can’t see how much Monero is in your wallet, and they can’t see where that wallet sent Monero. You can convert it back into Bitcoin and keep it in an anonymous wallet that the government cannot possibly tie to you since you laundered it through Monero and broke the chain.

Pretty high at first, those with dirty coins will be the most incentivized to put them through the wash. Which is why XMR holders who are willing to take the risk will be charging a healthy premium for the service.

However, you also gotta figure that those only there to clean their coins will instantly swap back into BTC, thus keeping the bitcoins circulating, if you get tainted coins you just pass them onto the next guy when you swap back into XMR. Rinse and repeat.

I expect that simple blockchain scanning might eventually be incorporated into the process to determine how "virginal" the BTC is, since a smaller blockchain history = more likely to be clean, so you could adjust your premium accordingly.

It's past the proof of concept stage using bitcoin's testnet and monero's stagenet. It's moving forward rapidly. They need to iron out quite a bit with regard to the "automated market makers" that are actually what make the swap happen, but this is looking really great.

One massive side benefit of atomic swaps is the ease with which miners will be able to convert mined XMR to BTC for easier and faster cashing out to fiat to pay for operations. This makes mining XMR essentially like mining BTC with one tiny extra step, no more worrying about an extra third party exchange that actually has a BTC/XMR market (which may be different than your preferred BTC/fiat exchange). I expect to see a nice hashrate bump once atomic swaps are active.
