The purpose of the coin is the hosting of api for various data stored to the blockchain. Normally doing this requires you sync the entire chain, then searching each block one by one. Super inefficient.
Indexers still download the entire chain, but they store the results to a queryable graphQL db that can be accessed per the specifications of some curator. This is expensive so to incentivized it they get tokens. But to prevent bad actors, you require a large amount of tokens to prove you have a stake in the validity. If they're fucking around they can be fined. Delegators can delegate tokens to an indexer to say "I trust this index and they should be trusted by others" and for this you also get a share of the token reward. The only downside is that if your want to pull your tokens out, you have to wait 28 days and don't receive any rewards during that time. This makes sure you pick wisely.
