The whole recycling thing was initiated by plastics companies in response to an increasing call for the ban of plastics due to environmental issues at the time. So they created this idea that we could just re-use it. The problem is this requires a lot of processing which is prohibitively expensive, so in practice, most plastics just end up in landfills anyways.
