How much do you have to understand computer science in order to truly understand crypto? What are some good books or other resources to teach myself this stuff without actually going to school for computer science?

What is “truly understanding crypto?” No one has 100% knowledge of anything. You would have to know everything to do that.

What's the point? The only technology that's actually got a use case right now is blockchain, it's a unique way to ensure decentralization and counter potential eCurrency manipulation. Everything else is snake oil riding on the coattails of Bitcoin.

Also what is “this stuff”

Most crypto projects are available online open source. You can start by just reading the code itself and trying to make sense of it. White papers are kind of a good starting point. I can’t code for shit but I can tell you the mechanisms of how most cryptos work.

I genuinely don’t know what he wants to know. Does he want to learn to code crypto? It’s in a variety of different languages so he’d want to focus on the platform he would ideally be using to create a dApp. If that was the end goal.

Or like...does he want to know what crypto is about? Understanding the mechanisms of how crypto works is pretty independent from fluently reading every line of code on GitHub. I guess, what’s the goal of this? I can’t give someone life advice if they’re being extremely vague and weird.

Mastering bitcoin has some nice code samples in python. Crypto zombies used to be great online tutorial, not sure if it’s still relevant. You don’t need school, but math helps tho.

Youtube? (unironically)

Bitcoin is more or less easy to understand how it works technically but with other cryptos it gets kinda difficult even if you have a computer science background.

Imagine you're trying to explain cryptocurrencies to a boomer who only understands economics but nothing about computers. How would you educate this boomer on computer science so that they'd be as knowledgeable as you are about crypto?
