Free/cheap labor. You've probably seen the Shawshank Redemption or Cool Hand Luke, same shit still happens today. Prisons will bid on contracts for labor, and prisoners will get "rewarded" with that work by having some wage (typically extremely low, 1/2 or 1/4 of minimum wage, but better than nothing) or just for the chance to be outside instead of being in a cell.

It's kind of true. Most prisoners won't do shit but take up government resources. However, some of the one's serving longer bids will work certain labor jobs like construction or garbage pick up, the catch is they earn like $0.15 an hour lol and it's somehow legal. Also, lots of inmates spend money on "canteen" or some shit where they get to order junk food like doritos, slim jims, chocolate bars etc. This money comes from their families or they go deeply in debt (to the prison) in exchange for consooming.

Actually, the government loses MILLIONS of your tax dollars on prisons. PRIVATE prison companies, however, often force inmates to perform some kind of labor for literally several dollars a month. If they don’t want to, they usually end up being a cleaning bitch who keeps the cell block spiffy.

Private prisons are just indentured servitude, we’re not teaching he vast majority of inmates how to re-integrate or how to make it in the world legally, because it’s more profitable for them to keep coming back to prison.
