Literally only good as a swing play near infrastructure bill memes (there is always one at the start of every presidency) and not worth it even if by some miracle one passed. CLF is a speculative play and VALE is for the international markets/sectors (but more for minerals in general).

https://www.mining.com/web/traders-at-odds-with-china-import-ban-keep-coal-cargoes-in-limbo/
(December 21, 2020)
>Worsening relations between Beijing and Canberra have stranded 74 vessels, about 8.1 million tons of coal, and an estimated 1,480 mariners off Chinese ports, according to an analysis of shipping data by Bloomberg.
>Relations between Australia and China have steadily deteriorated this year, with Beijing putting tariffs on imports of barley and wine and also informally restricting imports of coal. The state-run newspaper Global Times has reported that the government economic planner had appeared to formalize that ban, allowing power plants to import coal without restriction unless it was from Australia.
>“Diverting a ship from China to wherever does cost a lot of money and somebody has to pay for that,” he said. “There is a discussion who should pay for that — the owner, the charterer — should it be a split cost? Not many owners are willing to take such a cost right now.”

Imagine that you are a 42 year old Chinese iron ore buyer, living in Zhanjiang. Everyday, you read, and hear about from your friends in the industry the headaches they are going through with the trade war with Australia. Your friend is now on the hook for millions because a ship carrying his coal shipment is now stranded off the coast. You saw that the Australians gave you the finger after you complained to them that the price of iron was too high. Your boss calls you, tells you that the price of steel is all time high and that they are trying to ramp up production to be able to meet the demand for Chinese infrastructure building. You hang up, you have to buy 5,000 tons of iron. Who are you going to call?

The economy actually isn't that terrible, with big companies and craftsmen having full order books. The problem are the countless small shops and restaurants and shit. Germany is closed since November and will be till... April because boomers are scared and zoomers can pretend to save lives.
And since Europe has no big tech that will drag down the affected companies. VW can't sell cars when the people are poor as fuck.

>They have a platform is that they can create any synthetic molecule from yeast, and each time they design the yeast it gets faster and cheaper
They have had that platform for over a decade. They originally started as a biotech that wanted to use it for malaria drugs. It has taken them years to move towards products with big margins since being the "middle man" for many end products is garbage. The markup is in consumer goods which is where they are located but the legacy of their bulk production schemes has given them enormous debt loads that they keep having to finance with share dilution.
The big run up back in the summer that collapsed was from the Lavvan deal which is now in court. Their consumer product line IS promising but it doesn't generate enough cash for their debt load from their past mistakes.
AMRS is a great example of a GREAT technology with SHITTY people managing it. A recipe for disaster because that usually means the profitable parts will be sold off to companies that know how to run themselves. Melo is a snake oil salesman with a product that is huge if he wasn't in the way of it.
Buy puts near next earnings especially if that stock is having a run up to hedge your holdings. Thank me later.

Okey dokey you basically got the gist.
Check the Fedex Call/Put chart I got here. You can see a pattern where calls beneath the share price start going up in premium and down when it's above the share price. It happens because you're paying a higher premium to get a shorter distance to break-even. The inverse is true on puts.

The break-even is basically the price you said it'd go to + the premium you paid. so the $272.5 Call for January 15 break even is 272.5 + 9.85.
You do NOT need to hit Break-even to make money on a call or a put. You just need to sell the contract at a higher price than you paid for.
For this example, we go back to the $9.85. Check the low for the day and get a feel for how it's going to go. Try to never buy the high for the day.
There are other things but this is long enough.
I hope that helps, good luck out there!

>the Lavvan deal
I read into the Lavvan deal. Lavvan is the hewbrew word for white.
Basically it was a bunch of Jews who wanted Amryis to do all the R&D work and to shield all the extra costs so Lavvan could reap the benefits and use it to raise more funding and pay Amrys a sliver of funding for being good goys. Amrys might pay a fine for balking at not finishing the deal but it's a shitty deal that Melo should never have signed in the first place.

They should have tried designing cannabinoids straight from the start. There are a lot of startup synthetic cannabinoids companies popping up, like Ginkgo Bioworks and Demetrix getting good funding but they don't have a working supply chain like Amyris does. They're like junior miners. But the market will be huge if they can capitalize.

Melo is a fucking idiot though, synthetic biology is a incredible emergent technology and the first thing he does is try to pump the stock with unrealistic numbers to hit. His aim was to be profitable right away when the aim should have been on perfecting the technology. He's a trash tier CEO, like John Sculley.

Tesla's been unprofitable in all of it's existence but people buy the stock because of the promise of EVs. The promise of synthetic biology is you can skip the expensive processing of plants and just farm it easily from yeast. Like Heroin has 7 processing steps and you can cut it down to 2 with yeast if you have the technology to engineer the right kind of yeast.

Terminology is sometimes inconsistent between margin rate and margin interest rate.
The point is that brokers may lend you money based on funds you use as collateral. So a 4% "margin rate" on a $1000 loan means you can buy 1k of stock with $40, the $960 being supplied by the broker.
That $960 will come with interest you have to pay, quoted typically as an annual rate. The amount you can borrow and the interest on what you borrow is typically tiered based on how large your portfolio is (the theory being they can liquidate those holdings if you don't/can't pay back their loan) and/or how much of your portfolio is in cash.

I think the Lavvan deal was also suspect and garbage, because that company is sort of a kindred spirit with overpromising and underdelivering. But those agreements lead Melos to overpromise AGAIN in 2020 about becoming very profitable and debt free. It is all just part of the decade long Melos pattern. He CANNOT help himself.
>The promise of synthetic biology is you can skip the expensive processing of plants and just farm it easily from yeast. Like Heroin has 7 processing steps and you can cut it down to 2 with yeast if you have the technology to engineer the right kind of yeast.
I have been involved twice in AMRS over the past 6 years and its always ended in disappointment. For TA traders, its a good ticker but I just don't have the patience or energy to deal with getting burned again until AMRS DELIVERS instead of promising that THIS TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT.
I remember back-calculating how rewarding it is to short/buy puts on AMRS near every earnings. And it was something like a 30% upside/5% downside. And its probably why there is always so much short interest in AMRS.

I totally agree with you that Melo is a dumbass that should get fired but the tech has been improving, they are sitting on a large amount of data that can be used for machine learning to optimize the design of yeast. That alone is worth a lot.

That google early backer just gave them an extra ten million last week. I wonder why he keeps shoveling money into this furnace for the last two years or at least why he doesn't replace Melo.

Ehhh easier to do it with 0 dollars

I started in 2013 got a house, fixed up, took out heloc, use heloc for down payment and repairs on the next one, fix it up, wait 6 months, do it again.

I got up to about 750,000 of leverage with putting a 10k down payment down initially.

Also had zero carrying costs as I’d buy multifamily and renovate when a unit would come empty. Other units still covered mortgage taxes etc etc

Turn out of you’re on the “up swing” the “free real estate” meme is kinda true anon

I’d have to take an absolutely insane OTM call with $10000 to net that kind of leverage or return

I put in 10k and am not selling with about 250k in my pocket. I also
