ATTENTION NERDS:
Give me your best resources and tools for backtesting or even experiencing the day by day progression of the markets.

I would like to go through the market of 1997-2001 and explore the message boards and IRC records and NYT/WSJ headlines and Fed meetings etc. to decide how best to handle this.

Investopedia and tradingview are what I'm working with. Could use help incorporating data from the Fed site regarding yields and spreads also copper and vix... fuck it I need to learn to code.

Anon people are getting real scary with the 2000 bubble talk, but they may be on the wrong track. What if this is a much bigger bubble because this time we have politicians willing to stall the economic recovery? If the fed can't raise rates because the economy can't recover, well that could be interesting.

I don't think it would hurt to DCA into those positions - we have so many positive catalysts incoming
>ECB just increased QE
>FDA approving Pfizer vaccine
>Electoral college vote Monday removing uncertainty/market fear
>government funding bill pass
>stimulus bill pass
>Fed will likely indicate increasing QE at the 15th/16th meeting
>only bad economic news next week will be initial jobless claims
>then FDA committee will recommend moderna vaccine
>FDA will approve moderna vaccine
>Georgia Senate race January 5 double Republican victory - Dems will not turn out (split congress victory)

I completely understand your fear of going back in with coronavirus cases spiking nationwide / lockdowns starting to escalate
Imo we are going to see it peak late January after the Christmas / New Years traveling and close quarters - so it's possible we would get more lockdowns. My friend who is a nurse at Hopkins told me that they've recently been converting ICUs to treat the big increase in SARS patients
Other people have mentioned that they think hedge funds will sell positions so that they are under 2020 tax rules.. I would be interested to hear more opinions on this - but I don't think it's really a thing. Nobody expects taxation for capital gains to change with split congress.
>If you are paid in December of 2020, taxes are due April 15, 2021. If you are paid in early January 2021, taxes are due April 15, 2022.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2020/12/01/with-biden-tax-plan-should-you-accept-2020-pay-or-delay-until-2021/?sh=3c5896ba4c4a
I don't think people are going to choose to pay taxes in April 2021 versus April 2022 - they want to keep as much $ as possible to ride this boom

I think there's better probability of the market going up than it going down - the currency has to go somewhere, and it's not going into bonds - 10 year has stayed near 0.9 for a while now

I appreciate the advice, a lot of good points here. I keep running across murmurs of a 2021 deflationary collapse where all equities bust in a major liquidity crisis, but that we'll continue to see a melt-up of the S&P to 4500+ until that point.

It feels super dangerous when the TINA idea seems to be common knowledge and accepted - bonds are useless, savings accounts are a joke, there's nowhere else for cash to go except equities.

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. CLF announced the successful completion of acquiring all the operations of ArcelorMittal USA LLC and its subsidiaries.

On 2019 basis, the combined company generated revenues of roughly $17 billion and combined adjusted EBITDA of around $1.7 billion, including earlier disclosed expected synergies.

Post deal closure, Cleveland-Cliffs becomes the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America. Further, this synergistic transaction is expected to achieve around $150 million of estimated annual cost savings.

It's actually in index futures. I noticed a very interesting pattern back in August on the /NQ, did some backtesting and realized it's got some legs like it beats the market and is simple enough not to just be a curve fitted figment of my imagination. The issue was it was pretty worthless in a bear market and it did suffer from some path dependency that could bring it down if a certain really pathological series of price action took place. Today I saw the solution and how to adapt it to a bear market. It's just one of those things that comes to you in a flash. I'm pretty confident but we'll see how things play out.

> We're talking drug studies being shoved through in months when it takes years to get a drug passed typically.
This was always the end game of the antivaxxer controversy, and the morons protesting MMR vaccines were useful idiots of the highest order. They allowed pharma to build up vaccines so much that, the moment you slap the title "vaccine" on something, it becomes unassailable. Then start pressuring Congress to reduce regulation on them (they're so safe! we need them so badly!), make them mandatory, legislate away liability for the side effects, and jack up the price.
I'm not tinfoil enough to believe that they're related to Corona. It's more of a happy accident and a way for them to test their newfound freedom.

I honestly don't understand puts. I've looked it up a few times but for whatever reason can never wrap my head around it. Is it essentially a leveraged all-or-nothing bet on whether the stock will hit a certain price by a given date?

When you sell a put you're selling someone a contract for the ability to sell you 100 shares of a stock at the agreed upon price (strike)
Each contract is for 100 shares
So for example, AAPL $122 Put 12/18 is going for $1.75 - someone would pay you $175 for this contract, to have the right to sell 100 Apple shares to you for $122 each on December 18
If the price is above $122.01, they're (likely) not going to choose to exercise their right to sell to you, as why would they sell for $122 when they would lose money on it
If it goes below $122, let's say to $112, then on December 18 they would sell you 100 shares for $120 each (they could buy 100 shares for $112 each and then immediately sell it to you for $120 each, pocketing the difference)

>> No.24746752

>>24746630
You sell someone a put. It's a contract for 100 shares. It has a strike price.
They give you money immediately upfront. That's the put price (in per share units).
If it's a virgin Eurofag contact, they need to wait until the expiration to exercise the put, where they either sell you the stocks at the stock price, or walk away.
If it's a Chad Burger contract, they can sell whenever they want.
Either way, you as the seller of the put keep the money you received when you sold the put.
It doesn't need to be leveraged. If you sell a put of CRSR for $3, you can cash-secure it with $300. That's the money you're on the hook for. The infinite-losses thing comes from your paper losses by buying a stock for less than it's worth.

Selling puts is easy to understand. Let's say it's Monday morning and SPY opens at $366. You think to yourself there is no way SPY goes under $360 today so you sell a put that expires at the end of the day that says if SPY does in fact go under $360 you'll buy 100 shares of it, at that price, from whoever you sold the put to no matter how much lower than $360 it goes. In exchange for that put you sold you get some premium to keep. If SPY doesn't go under $360 by the end of the day then the put expires worthless and you profit however much the premium is.
If you want some risk management then you open what's called a credit spread which limits the amount of premium you get but also limits your risk.
