I don't think we can know in advance what an appropriate sell price is. What you have to do is have a general idea at what price, right now, would be a compelling price for you to sell. As the PM approaches that price, you have to evaluate economic conditions as well as market sentiment to decide whether to sell or hang on.

In 2011, there was extreme bullishness on silver and that was an indicator sell.

At the moment, I will prepare to sell a portion of my silver (I have thousands of ounces) if it hits $45/ozt. Of course, as I said above, I must evaluate economic conditions and sentiment. If the USD totally goes to pot and it costs $20 for one chicken egg, then obviously $45/ozt is too low for silver. Likewise, if CPI, PPI, PCE are low and you have trolls all hyping silver, it's probably time to sell at least a portion. Likewise, one should sell or hedge one's mining stocks in such an environment.

I think with the mining stocks especially you have to think about what signs you're going to look for as sell signals. With mining stocks you have two intermediate steps to get from stock>dollar>PM> to assets. Whereas PMs are just PM>asset in the event of hyperinflation/hyperdeflation, and that seems to be what people are holding mining stocks and PMs for

True, the mining stocks are essentially a derivative of the PMs themselves. However, it is possible though highly unlikely that the management of a mining company are exceptionally skilled traders/macro economists and can hedge their production. I wouldn't count on it, though. That said, mining stocks are very easily sold and can be sold in a few seconds without much thought. Selling physical PMs one has in one's possession is more difficult, which I why I recommend everybody draft a plan for selling so when the time comes, they won't suffer some sort of paralysis by analysis.

I didn't see the second half of your posting before posting my initial reply. My view is not as complicated as yours because I do not believe there will be a hyperinflation. This means that if I were to sell my mining stocks because a price target has been achieved, I would feel relatively comfortable holding cash.

I posted a series of long posts a few days ago that went into much more detail about this. The principal signal to sell a mining stock (assuming no fraud, mismanagement, or government interventions) would be the same signal for selling physical PMs. When the PMs are skyrocketing and everyone and his dog is hawking PMs as a way to get rich, it's time to sell or hedge one's PMs and mining stocks positions.

A good production hedge for precious metals mining companies is simply put base metals. If pm's go down and the economy starts doing well base metals will go up thanks to industry. But for deflation? I don't think many companies hold short positions on 30-year treasuries

I'm just distrustful of stocks because they are different from PMs in that PMs have two prices really, the spot price and the real price (man to man); Stocks can only be bought and sold digitally. PMs will always have the backdoor escape route of being able to sell to someone even though that would mean less liquidity whereas in a digital/online market you have access to pretty much anyone who would want to buy. So there's pros and cons, but I feel safer in PMs.

In terms of public acceptance of PMs, in my view that is going to be hyperinflationary because if the masses got so far off the reservation that they are starting to use gold and silver as money again the dollar paradigm will have lost substantial hold over their minds and therefore will be worth less

I have had a very interesting thought with regard to repudiation of the fiat USD. While many believe that it would be hyperinflationary, perhaps guaranteed so, I believe that is entirely dependent on US policy. Mind you, I agree that the monkeys in charge of the Fed and Treasury probably don't have the guts to do what I'm about to say but hear me out.

If the USD were repudiated and people started transacting using PMs or even a foreign currency whenever possible, it doesn't change the fact that all US government debts are denominated in USD and must e paid in USD. What the US government could do is get real religion when it comes to fiscal rectitude and start actually paying down the debt. The populace would have to continue paying all taxes in USD which creates a demand for USD. Eventually, the debt would all be paid off.

Here's the interesting thing that was brought to my attention that I hadn't previously considered. The USD has lost purchasing power every year since its devaluation in 1933. During that long period of time the USD lost purchasing power, the US debt got bigger and bigger. Wouldn't it stand to reason, then, that the USD would get stronger and stronger as the debt diminished? If we got serious about eliminating the debt by paying it off, it might even be possible that $20 would buy an ounce of gold once again. Of course, the US would see a long deflation during this period.

The US would not even have to pay off all the debt. The paying off of a good portion of the debt would encourage people and foreign investors to once again want to hold USD. You need only look at what happened to the Canadian dollar from the 1980s to around 2003. Once Canada cleaned up their books somewhat, the CAD went from $0.63USD to about $1.08USD.

Interesting story. They had a JV with Centerra who had spent million on exploring the property and readying it for drilling. Centerra had come up with over 100 drilling targets until they suddenly gave back full interest to Mammoth after a corporate decision to retreat from Mexico altogether due to safety concerns. MTH is now trying to ready themselves for a major drilling program of their own. The property bears a lot of gold and has big potential. Share is way undervalued now and I regret buying only 4k shares at 0.055CAD. Will probably add more at some point. Share at 0.09CAD now, target is at least 0.2CAD

We do not know, but I am guessing all coins that are IRA citified should be off your stack (or on depending upon how you see it). I keep a small allocation to it, and I see Junk silver as a liability if you plan to stay on the grid, but a massive boon if you go off.

Plenty of people here can help you and we even have industry professionals in the thread who understand how things work in practice and who've experience that no amount of learning or DD could ever bring. One thing for juniors is that the price of the stock responds to new value being created rather than earnings. New value is created when the company explores a property and begins defining their deposit(s) and creating resource/reserve estimates, meaning the share price moves in accordance to the estimated net present value of the mine even though it might take many years to even begin developing a mine.

I think they're both decent ways to get people interested, but obviously getting someone to accept PMs as payment is a more substantial commitment because they aren't the most liquid commodities right now so if the person you're trying to convince is short on liquidity/cash they probably won't take it because they need to pay for bills not hold gold or silver/look for an opportunity to barter it, but that would be even more of a victory if you could. Just look for opportunities to normalize paying and accepting payment in gold and silver which increases the value of your stack by making it more liquid

Not necessarily, what makes gold and silver so good for use as a currency is that historically it wasn’t used for much else. The only big ones I can think of are gold (and silver to lesser extent) for jewelry, and then the very niche stuff like colloidal silver. If extremely common things like food or clothing were used as currency then the supply would expand and contract wildly, because people will eat the food and use the clothing.
