What I do is keeping about 40% in BTC, 40% in other coins and use at most 20% to trade swings on margin.
USD pairs, so BTC/USD, ETH/USD or ZEC/USD.
My profits are not astronomical but it works relatively well.I stopped losing a ton once I stopped trading X/BTC pairs. When you trade X/BTC instead of X/USD, you're betting on 2 exchange rates at once and things can go very sour fast.
