Bullshit, by the time steam beta cae out, PC market was at an all time high, we got the around the same time doom 3, far cry, UT2004 (in 2003), painkiller...
The unealthy PC market myth is born after the fact to give an excuse for steam killing the retail market (ie : having property rights), DRMs only got worse since then, and steam is one of them, it made online only DRMs a thing.
They took hostage counter strike FFS. You think they'd have done that if their platform was a legit saviour? Steam's success is entirely made up from coercion.
