anyone else contemplating the possibility that this isnt the real switch yet?

Yes, Kraken, Coinbase, Binance, eToro etc. are all exchanges, and the money you have on them isnt particularly secure in the event of hacking, servers crashing, a scam etc. You need to get a wallet (they are free e.g. Exodus or Atomic) to store your crypto which gives you a secret key (like a password), which is then secure and basically impossible to hack. Your keys = your crypto. You dont get keys on an exchange hence the exchange itself *technically* owns your coins. Understand?
