Canadian here. Having lived in both Canada and Germany, I would 100% rather pick Germany.

Canadian taxes are high but we don't get jack shit for that in return. The governments here are mostly staffed with incompetent B-students or social justice "experts", and whereas professional bureaucracy is the norm in Germany (and even moreso in Singapore; it's harder to get into the government than it is into the top investment banks), in Canada the government is a haven of also-rans and clock watchers. We spend all our taxes on salaries buying off civil servants who never work. And the private sector work culture is awful. Extremely passive-aggressive behaviour is the fucking norm, as a professional you are often expected to work unpaid overtime, and your salary is probably 60% of an equivalent in the United States.

Being poor in the US really sucks, but as soon as you start to make even a tiny bit of money, you are so much better off being there.
