This is my first junk purchase. She weighs a bit over 760g, full sterling, 25cm in diameter, cost me exactly 500€ so it was just a bit over spot, although that's a price I'm willing to pay for a beauty like this. Managed to begin sparking a relationship with the seller, super cool guy with tons of junk silver all around that buys them from auctions and friends. Knowledgeable and professional too -- said this piece looks distinctly Portugalian and that he Röntgen scanned it to ensure it's sterling. Had similar pieces but I'm too poor so I'll just buy some more from him later probably

Another anon asked me to fill it with Werther's toffees but I'd have to buy a bunch to fill this baby up

News from Summa Silver, they plan to begin drilling their Mogollon gold-silver property in New Mexico next year which is an interesting decision to me. I'd thought they would focus on their Hughes project in Nevada since it has a drilling project ongoing at the moment, and has a lot of totally undrilled ground. Could it be that they haven't been able to get good results there so far? In any case, the Mogollon property is interesting as well. Still sucks that these guys aren't on TSX or NYSE... I don't want to invest through the illiquid FRA...

>Coins or bars?
Depends on where you're from at least when it comes to silver. Most Eypo countries have VAT on silver but a few have VAT-free silver coins. I think silver bars are taxed all around the EU but not sure. Also if you're a bong you'll get tax benefits when selling Britannia coins. Other than that it's up to preference. Get gold first as it's more expensive to stack (good start would be a half, one or two ounce coin) and then you can just buy silver pretty much whenever you want to without having to pay huge lump sums.
>Copper
Honestly not sure about that. I hear you can just go collect copper scrap you find lying around and stack that lol

the premiums are super high on those man, just save your money and shoot for 1/4 oz coins at the least. If you want a 1/10 or a 1/20th just for the novelty then go for it, but dont stack multiples of them, by the time you buy 20/20 oz boys for a full ounce, you've spent enough on premiums to get a few extra fractions.

Talking to my relatively normie brother today while he gave me a ride to the airport we started talking finance. BTC came up and he immediatly started shilling it, even after I told him I had .8 btc, I dont know what it is about people and BTC where they ALWAYS reply to "BTC is a speculative investment, it has no inherent value" with "its gonna hit a million, BTC holder will be richest people in the world and everything everywhere will be bought directly with BTC" I mean I tried to expain it needs an exchange which he got, and I tried to explain that BTC 2.0 - infinatte replicas can be made, but it didnt seem to sink in that its not an inherantly valuble thing that cannot ever go down in the long run. He also thought it was something no one had really heard of... so im super bearing on it now... at least he knew what gold was, but he seemed to think that it being super old was bad, and that BTC being super new was good... he thought you couldnt even buy gold...

Thinking of liquidating it all now desu... too many people making BTC to a million vids.

PMs are still hated, miners even more so, I always feel safer knowing this isnt a super hyped sector

also my limit on VGLD went through, CHEAPIES GALORE !!

be warned a lot of people have been disappointed with their work lately. They havent been able to increase production at their operating mine in Idaho which hurt them badly. I am hoping their drill results are good at Morrison but it could be challenging to drill this early with deep heavy snow, as well as how cold it will be. To top it all off the ore there is nuggety pocket gold. Core sampling will have to be very specific and thorough to be accurate

Eh I`m in the deflation camp but I`m buying miners anyway. The monetary response to deflation is more money printing (I know it's bank reserves) and fiscal spending. General currency fuckery and loss of confidence in currencies in general will be the result as central banks will do everything they can to prevent deflation (they probably can't). Eventually they'll probably change the rules like they did in March to start the real inflation. Regardless, PM's do great in inflation and in deflation due to the monetary and fiscal response.

And I just want to be clear though, that we will have deflation in the short term until the people and government feel the pain enough and recognize small scale stimulus isn’t working. Only then will they start spending enough to counteract the deflationary forces. Inflation is coming, but they have to get over the hump of deflation first with big enough spending. Until then, like the last stimulus, you will see short term deflation, followed by deflation. We will see waves of this until Congress decides to go all in and have stimulus large enough to actually push us into the high inflation scenario most in pmg are waiting for. So don’t get shaken out on this roller coaster. And don’t play in leveraged paper or you can lose your shirt.

I don't remember much about UEX but they're a small cap play. U acts like an ETF holding the underlying Uranium if I remember right. Cameco is one of two majors in the industry with Khazatoprom. It depends on what you're looking for; I think UEX will give you a lot more torque in a full blown bull market at the cost of a lot of risk. U will go up so long as Uranium prices rise, which it eventually definitely will. Cameco is like an inbetween for these two in terms of risk vs reward. they also pay a dividend.

basically the rule is if the claim jumpers cant pay back the damages on the ground committed while illegally mining, than their equipment can be confiscated by either the claim owner or mines inspector to recoop the looses and pay for any damages done to the site. I ve seen people loose their trucks and campers because they were caught illegally mining. Two years ago one of the gate watchers in our area caught 3 junkies with an excavator and washplant setting up on one of my mates claims. Cops were involved and the gear was confiscated, than handed over to the claim owner. I am very surprised these fucks werent screwed, they were caught in the act of dredging (a $5-10k fine on its own). If I were caught doing that, I would be done, KO do not pass go.

I think it can also be explained in economic terms.

As development expands and depletes our stock of natural, unmodified landscapes, the remaining landscapes become more valuable because of their scarcity. Concomitantly, the value of the Pebble project's watersheds increase because another natural resource, salmon runs, depend on them. This kind of thing should have been priced in long ago but possession of these things hasn't really made sense so far. However, in the US at least, national parks have been breaking attendance records with each year and those visits create something like a share of interest in the parks/landscapes.

You can see this in advertising strategies over the last decade and especially in 2020. Pay attention to how frequently images of natural landscapes are used to sell products.

QE and all the other asset purchase programs are just ways of creating bank reserves. That’s all the Fed can do without Congressional Budget deficits. Bank reserves are useless in an environment where credit is contracting, like now. Banks have tightened lending standards and tens of millions are out of work depressing lending demand. From both directions, it’s contracting and that’s deflationary. QE is just creating meaningless reserves that aren’t doing anything.

Addressing deflationary anons - doesn't deflation totally collapse the financial system? It makes the debt, which we have never had more of, increasingly more expensive to pay and it discourages consumerism

So debt and consumerism, the two bedrocks of the entire international economy, are going to get shattered into pieces.

The central banks surely know this and will(and have been) doing everything in their power to prevent this? i.e money printing.

Is your argument that they haven't printed enough to stop deflation? Won't they just immediately ramp up the printing presses as soon as shit hits the fan?

QE deputizes banks to print the money which bids up assets through a million different channels. "Not printing" my ass.

When QE reaches the limits of its ability to do this as people get nervous about the state of the market, we'll see a correction sure. I think it's imminent, personally.

Others talk about a bond market collapse, yields spiking, etc. This is all well and good, and you might get a buying opportunity...

The problem is that right now at this moment, the only real "printing press" activity the Fed can do is monetize Congressional budget deficits. If Congress doesn't authorize the spending, the Fed can't "print" it. All the "money printing" that people talk about with QE is not actually money printing. It's creating bank reserves.

Think of it this way: if I start counterfeiting dollar at my house, but instead of spending them, I stuff them all under my mattress, is that inflationary? If the money never gets into the real economy, was it ever really printed? Bank reserves are not money. All the proceeds from asset sales to the Fed in QE or another program go into restricted accounts at the Fed and the bank CAN'T spend it. It only counts toward their reserve requirements. Therefore, it's not inflationary.

In order to get the "printer go brrr" that everyone in pmg is expecting, we are going to need to see Congress authorize BIG stimulus spending. Either that or authorize the Treasury to guarantee loans in order to get banks to loosen lending standards. Both of these are difficult politically unless we have REAL pain. Do you think Congress will pass UBI in January? It would take something like that due to the massive deflationary pressures we are facing. I do think that eventually Congress will do it. It's sort of inevitable at this point. But it's not happening now and it will take more pain coming in order for them to be able to politically justify it. It's not automatic and it requires Congress...the Fed cannot do it unless they change the Federal Reserve Act to let them directly monetize the liabilities on their balance sheet.

This is a good discussion that touches broadly on the topics.

https://youtu.be/14I1BdncYVo

I think you're right anon, the reality is that everyone is expecting congress to authorize big spending. Whether that can actually happen with a Republican senate is an interesting question. I think we will eventually see the Fed and the Treasury merged, Jefferson and Jackson rolling in their graves regardless.

At the same time, the USA isn't the entire world, and while USD may not be filtering out yet, most other central banks are feeding their economies a lot of money at virtually 0% interest. You may not see a lot of inflation yet, but imported goods are likely going to increase in price.

>> No.23873198

>>23872647
The only assets getting bid up are the bonds the Fed is buying. The other asset bidding that happens is a side effect of driving rates down. It pushes speculative money into riskier and riskier assets seeking a return. That's what you can thank for this bull market. It's not Fed money bidding stocks higher. It's money that would have been in safer investments now being forced into stocks.

The primary dealers using the warehouse accounting don't get to keep that money. It's a shell game in Fed accounts. They don't get to keep that cash. They get to keep some of the profit for performing the warehouse role, but it's not them printing money and keeping it. It gets "destroyed". It's just an accounting trick so that primary dealers don't have to tie up their own funds to basically serve the Fed.

I would say we historic shorts in the Treasury market and those poor sods are going to get absolutely fucked.

Yes, UBI or something on its level is what it would take to overcome the deflationary forces we have. Sure, it's coming. But it's not here yet and it's going to take more pain to make it politically palatable.

You should watch this. Very good overview.

As I said:

>QE deputizes banks to print the money which bids up assets through a million different channels.

Yes, deputized money-printing. And it's not just existing capital squeezed out of bonds and going to stocks, it's cheaply acquired debt (ie, newly printed by banks) also going into stocks because line always go up, well beyond interest payments.

Money supply rises inexorably. It bids up bonds, stocks, real estate. Everything.

I agree there might be hiccups with that process. I just think anyone betting on a prolonged yield spike or contraction of the money supply in the event of bad debts are kidding themselves.

The Feds are not playing around with this. They will not blink on yields. Debt forgiveness will come. Those imaginary numbers will become real money with real velocity.

Thanks for your reply. I assumed money was being literally printed and somehow pumped directly into stocks and real estate etc.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, this capital flight into equities and real estate is a result of bonds and other safe havens being made artificially unattractive by the FED? Therefore EXISTING money is fleeing into more speculative assets? It's not NEW money pumping the system.

I suppose the 'stimulus' we had was literal inflation though.

This is a way to think of the inflation vs deflation. Think of the money supply as water in a bucket. Think of the inflationary forces as water pouring into the bucket. Now imagine the bucket has holes in it. The water flowing out of the bucket's holes are the deflationary forces.

Pouring water into the bucket is inflationary, but if more water is leaking out of the bucket than is being poured into it, then it's net deflationary and the water level drops. In order for the water level to rise, you'd need to pour more water into the bucket than is leaking out. That's what we need to see. We have bigger deflationary pressures than we have seen in a long time and these were only temporarily stalled with the first round of stimulus. It ran out. You'd need to see something bigger and more sustained to overcome the deflationary forces to actually create inflation. It's a tough political sell, especially if Republicans keep the Senate. So that's why I think it's more likely that we will need to feel the pain in order for Congress to act with sufficient force.

>>23873597
I disagree regarding the specifics of the asset purchases. I do agree that we will see action, but I simply disagree that the Fed can do it on its own. It can't and this is why Powell has been adamantly begging Congress to act. The Fed is pushing a string. It simply can't do what people think it can and it has been trying to convince people it can. We will see big stimulus and debt forgiveness and these kinds of measures, but Congress has to do it. The Fed may not be playing around, but it might as well be, because it has no power to do anything except beg Congress to do it. In the long run, yeah, it's likely to happen.

>> No.23874307

>>23872265

A debt deflationary depression would crush us utterly, and it's what the FED has been running from for over a decade. Unfortunately, for the time being, the printed money is held in bank reserves at the FED that may be only used as collateral to lend money into existence from the banks, who have been tightening lending standards and lending less.

I think when deflation really kicks in, they'll use FedCoin and change the rules around to finally allow themselves to do real money printing. Then, inflation really comes.

This follows a common theme among most hyperinflationary periods like that of Weimar Germany - First come deflation, then hyperinflation.

We can also look at the bond market for clues, and the 10 year just screams we're going into deflation. Bond market is straight up hard math unlike the stock market, and has misled us a only handful of times in decades. Just look at that 30 year channel we're in.

This sort of happened in a limited way between 1929 - 1945. The depression, which was deflationary, resulted in debt getting so expensive that it crushed plenty of businesses. The value of the dollar increased during that time, and gold was being confiscated.

Once we got to WW2, the Fed was engaging in yield curve control. Inflation in the US ran anywhere between 10-20% during the war, which is why food was extremely expensive and people were growing food in their backyard.

I imagine we're about to enter the depression phase, which lasts a long time. These trends are very slow. Gold is a nice asset to own before a deflation because even if it's value does decrease there is no counterparty risk (such as getting your deposits bailed in when banks are not willing to let you access your deposits). The best thing to own however, is US treasury bills, because the Government is stuck with the debt and they cannot default (unless they change the Constitution).

I’m a gold bug and appreciate Schiff for promoting sound money, but he’s retarded when it comes to macro.

>> No.23874533

Yield curve control is a way to officially lie about inflation. The Fed puts a cap on interest rates, but the real rate of inflation runs higher than the nominal interest rate even though the market is a net seller of treasuries.

When the market sells off bonds, the Fed buys them. This is how the US debt shrinks (and it did so at the end of WW2). This is the complete reverse of the Volcker shock of 1981-1982.

Inflation was at 10-20% despite the fact that a single dollar was priced at $35/oz gold between 1932-1971 (the gold window) but even then inflation was purely a monetary phenomenon.

>> No.23874559

Think of the US debt as an account balance. When you sell a US treasury and the Fed (a private bank yet also a government institution) buys them, they are "paying back" the debt.

The government pays back the debt when a war, or pandemic is over or some sort of huge crisis is resolved. This is why markets do poorly when a war or pandemic ends.

The Pound Sterling (the last reserve currency) survived the Great Depression, but it eventually collapsed after WW2 with Breton Woods (15 years after the downturn). Back then the United States was the rising power.

I am pretty sure the dollar reserve currency status will survive after an economic depression. I think the next depression will start in another country first. I'm thinking it will start in China (the current rising power) and then economies that are linked with them will get sucked in as well given that their debt pile is much worse than ours.

After 2008, they passed Dodd-Frank. This time the Government cannot legally bail out banks. Derivative claims are senior to bank deposits, so if the other side of the derivative exercises those options (another bank possibly), the owner of the option gets first dibs on collateral.

What I don't understand is how FDIC plays into this scenario. Technically it's a taxpayer funded option, so they will have to cover depositors up to the $250K limit. But I'm not sure of the seniority of FDIC. If lenders do not lend money to the government, FDIC would be unable to shore up enough capital to pay off depositors. So what would the US do? Reach out to the IMF for a loan (they are the lender of last resort)? Keep in mind that the UK had to borrow from the IMF that one time.

Gold in the 1930s is US dollars in 2020 (?). This time there are not enough US dollars.

When there is not enough fiat (US dollars), and no one wants to lend that fiat into existence, the same deflationary spiral happens. China needs dollars to maintain growth, and if the US does not give them those dollars in exchange for goods, we're all in a world of hurt. They will end up having to sell their gold to pay their debts (which lowers the price of gold).

That might explain the weird shit going down in DC. One side of the swamp knows about this massive debt pile and they would rather keep the system intact, and the other side of the swamp is pissed that the Chinese won't take accountability for their actions in fucking up the world in the first place.

We're largely in agreement, I'm just commenting on the fact that it will be fast. Congress will move fast on stimulus. And the Fed will move fast to smack down yields, even faster than March where it took about 10 days to spike them back down. More importantly I'm saying: Everybody in the world now realizes this.

My beef is with predictions by these guys like Van Metre that the markets will be stupid enough to not see this coming, and will foolishly put their gold and gold miners on sale during a yield spike and or big stock dip, as though massive intervention would not clearly be coming. His calls on ~1300 gold I find irritatingly contrarian for the sake of sensationalism, and frankly irresponsible to forecast to people.

Look at march as a case-study, as I'm sure everybody on wall street now has:

3/09: Market realizes yields are going up, gold starts to dip.
3/16: Market realizes the fed is gonna step in, gold stops dipping.
3/20: Market realizes the fed has got yields heading down again, gold instantly pops back up.

This whole sequence of events is predictable, so why should a yield spike crush gold if it won't be allowed to continue more than a week? We literally just saw this same movie play out, everybody knows the ending. It's a self-defeating prophesy.

People will be better positioned so they don't have to sell off gold for margin calls. People will snap up gold aggressively knowing what's coming. People are stacking cash waiting for this. Van Metre's in for a hell of a surprise when his predictions on bonds comes true and gold does the opposite of what he expects. As is anyone who follows his advice.

That doesn't make sense though. You're skipping a step here. The chinese own the most US debt. If the US is unable to pay it, then they essentially default. Thus, the credibility of the dollar is effectively destroyed. Holding US debt would go from an asset, to a liability. From that, the dollar losses value, and countries will be forced to dump it.

1300 gold is contrarian, but entirely possible if central banks are forced to dump their gold for dollars (which I see as the credible threat). Note that all the central banks hoarding gold are geopolitically antagonistic to the US.

A deflationary crisis can cause bank failures, so owning gold can be seen as safer than having bank deposits in this specific case.

I think even van Metre is a gold bull long term, but I could be wrong. Even Brent Johnson is a gold bull long term and thinks gold will be the last man standing. A lot of the arguments have to do with the short term and the specific sequence of events.

I actually don't play anything but long term with my PMs. I hold physical and I stack and I recommend everyone else do the same. However, where I get put at odds with pmg is when it comes to people thinking PMs will moon right around the corner and people get disillusioned when prices go down, because they've been fed the Schiff et al line about QE being money printing and things like that. The end case of the thesis may be the same, but the PM sphere is full of bad understandings of the actual plumbing and mechanisms. So people make stupid bets like buying PMs on credit. I also think miners will be a very rocky road through this and anyone playing with paper on leverage is asking for trouble. I just try to temper expectations to be more in line with reality.

I am playing van Metre's bond play though. But I also have my PM stack and continue to add to it. Whatever profit I take as well as the dry powder I have, is for non-PM commodities related plays as I think commodities will be the next "it" place for money in the eventual inflationary environment we will likely get.

Note how in this picture, the purchasing power of the dollar increases in some periods, particularly the depression of 1929-1931. Typically, inflation is the rule but deflation is the exception. The last time we had interest rates this low was right before the Great Depression (in fact it is much lower now than it was during that period).

The most important feature of physical gold is that it has zero counter party risk. Everything else is a liability. Stocks are liabilities, bonds are liabilities, and a bank deposit is a liability.

Sometimes, the nominal value of paper cash is different from its electronic form, such as in countries like Argentina where a paper US dollar is worth more than a bank deposit US dollar.
