ETH is the basic infrastructure of DeFI. And while LINK do the off-chain stuff, ETH is the network where the transactions will be running.

Also is thousand of times faster than bitcoin.
A bitcoin transaction direct from my (pruned) node takes around 2 hours, paying the maximum fee. Many times I had to do replace-by-fee to see it going, in which case it takes up to 3-4 hours.
With ether, its immediate. Sometimes only half a second. I just tab from one window to the other and its done.
Ether is technically superior to bitcoin, and its the lead in DeFI. So yes, 5k is possible.
