The little mini green candle last week basically said we can continue forever (otherwise the downtrend is overextended and liable to stop). A good sign that the downtrend is going to end is when you get a large red candle on massive volume that leaves a long bottoming tail. Until that happens, expect continuous new lower lows and lower highs. See the green bar before we started going down? I don't have the data in front of me but I'd bet it had unusual volume. It is a huge bar, and it has a topping tail, these are signs of the end of an uptrend. You can see the same in march and in september.
The sign isn't a buy signal on its own, it's a warning sign. You have to dig deeper to find a buy signal if you want to play this, or otherwise you have to buy when the next bar overtakes the high of this red bar, and put your stop loss under the low of this bar. I wouldn't recommend it at this time, it's extremely aggressive to do so so soon.
In september, for example, you would have played it at the bar on... 24/09/2020 is it? Because you have that signal, plus failure to produce a new low (17/09/2020 vs 24/09/2020 is the same low), indicating not just the end of a downtrend, but also reversal. Then you set your buy stop above the high of the 24/09/2020 bar and the stop loss below the low of the 24/09/2020 bar. This is still somewhat aggressive, but it's viable.
I suspect there's a strong buy signal if you dig deeper in the 25/09/2020 bar, as well as in the 04/10/2020 bar (which is a non-aggressive, great-quality area to play, because the previous pivot high took out the pivot high that was reached during the downtrend last time before retracing, and the retracement level is not too deep (is it about 40%? Anything in 40-60% range is OK, 50% being perfect).

Give it to me straight: am I fucking up by sleeping on stocks? My mom invested a lot of money right after the crash in March (?) and it has been pretty profitable for her since. She kept trying to get me to look into it but I kept putting it off because I wasn't interested in it. She's telling me that it's still a good opportunity and that I'll make money but I just can't bring myself to buy into it. It's hard to put into words, I guess I'm just not interested in investing in a long term way, and I don't trust myself enough to invest wisely, or rather, to pay attention to what's going on and know when to buy and when to sell.

The most obvious thing about margin is that it's leverage; with your holdings as collateral, you can make purchases with loaned cash. However, if you plan on owning those shares outright, and you can pay for them in your own cash, why would you take a loan to buy them?

Which brings you to the second thing about margin, which newbs don't truly appreciate at first, at least I didn't; margin allows you to buy and sell without needing to wait for funds or shares to settle (within limits). So, you might buy something on margin if you want to turn around and sell it quickly. But if you're going for a long term hold, what's the use of that for you?

Margin is for leverage and day trading. If you intend to do neither of those things, then buy what you want in cash.

is anyone here able to day trade profitably? feels like for literally any system you could come up with there is just as much possibility that you lose more than you win (relative to your risk/reward of course), that in the long run you're not profitable. market conditions change every day and no system actually predicts what is going to happen. just because you back test it and it worked in the past doesn't mean that it will work profitably in the long run in the future. every indicator or even chart pattern strategy wins and loses, for as many wins as i can find i can find just as many if not more losses. all the conditions are the same in each example but price can still do whatever the fuck it wants to at any given moment, just because "it should go down" doesn't mean it will.

i just find it hard to have faith in anything. i can model the data just fine it's just that literally price can do whatever it wants, sometimes it goes and sometimes it just doesn't. you don't know whether this signal will be part of a trend or part of some consolidation that literally just remains flat for potentially hours. any serious feedback would be appreciated.

yeah but how? the most common method i've learned operates off of using the ATR which measures average volatility, and using some multiple of that. but what are you gonna pick? 1:1 needs at least a 51% win rate to be profitable, 1:2 needs at least 34% win rate, 1:3 needs at least 26%, but who's to say you actually get that over a hundred, thousand, or million trades? how can you have the faith when you go on a losing streak and your win rate temporarily drops below, maybe way below, profitability? do you just go "welp just gotta keep doing this same thing and it will eventually work out"?

i understand risk management very well the only problem is believing that whatever your system does have the proper win rate to match up with the risk:reward ratio. because if it doesn't you're just literally throwing money away.

>ENTIRE market is blood red
>These motherfuckers are up almost 5% in a day
What's going on here? Is this really just people waiting on Q3 earnings? It's pretty odd to see such defiance of the market trends. It's basically solely because of these niggers that I was green today.
