Say I wanted to spend a couple $100s on GME calls. I have a boomer stock portfolio and am curious about learning options, frankly mostly as a way to buy small put positions to hedge my stocks. So I have read up a bunch (I will read more, I can’t even keep the greeks apart yet) and I want to put down a few bucks to get a feel for what the hell they are. However, just like when I started researching how to invest in stocks, the one thing I couldn’t find was any good, basic guide on what a reasonably smart move looks like (other than “buy something you believe in and hold for a long time because day traders just fail”.) Now, while certainly not being an expert, or even good, I can at least understand when I buy a stock if I expected it to do what it does next or if that’s a surprise.
But I have no idea what a good option play actually look like, so I was hoping someone here could tell me, what the hell is actually smart? I’m thinking jan 15/2021, but what strike price.
Don’t worry that giving me advice will make you responsible for setting me off on my way to lose it all, I’m just using coffee money and my goal is to decrease the gambling aspect by hedging, allowing me to hold more calmly. Yet I don’t want to start by buying puts, since just doing it on speculation that something WILL go down is the kind of gambling I want to avoid. So buying calls on GME seems a good starting test, since it’s also fun and I believe the DD (I hold 1k gme shares). But please, anons, take pity on a noob and suggest a strike price and some motivation so I can learn.

the most basic of basics is looking at delta = percent chance you are in the money at expiry.
note this is purely math / market / technical, so it does not apply to GME, which is moving on fundamentals, surprise events, and binary events.

but if you take your favorite big cap blue chip, and but a .50 delta call, its basically saying you have a 50% chance to be in the money at exp.

so what about GME? well you can try and look at other short squeeze stocks, I like comparing to OSTK because a) its recent, b) it squeezed gradually over time instead of in 1 day, much like GME is seeming to do.

You could then look at the increase in price as a %, maybe compare the short % floats, but in general short squeezes are rare and very difficult to measure events.

t. 7 GME 15 Calls @ .67 cost, 8 GME 18 calls @ 1.19 cost basis

Come literally cannot sell more bottles than they currently do. Every single person drinks coke exclusively already, what more do they want? For our veins to literally flow coke? Come now, that's just not likely to happen. My girlfriend and I just brushed our teeth with coke. We use coke in our toilet because it smells really nice when you flush. They literally cannot sell more coke than they already do. When the doctor delivers my baby, my health insurance will pay for my child's first come, and he will be baptized in coke. They literally could not sell any more coke than they already do. Coke is the life of our nation. I love coke. Did you know that Moot made 4chan while drinking coke? It's true. Did you know that Snacks only let CP threads run undeleted for hours back in those days because he was refilling on coke? I do. Back then, we didn't have Amazon prime to deliver same day coke, so he had to go out in person. Now you can tell Alexa to get you a coke. They literally could not sell more coke.

The inevitability of stimulus is priced in but delays are currently well expected. Which isn't to say setbacks won't be responded to with some de-risk selling every time. I think it would be easier to trade this market if you deliberately ignored all news and all information about the market, only traded chart. For instance, I am swing trading QQQ right now, am up a few percent but have taken a lot of drawdown since October 13th. This drawdown is within normal range of acceptable for me with TQQQ. But I'm more nervous about it than I would otherwise be if this wasn't such a gong show of an election year. I think the nasdaq and S&P will move within a flat range up until the election without stimulus passing. With stimulus this week -unlikely but for hypothetical sake- you might see the ATH taken out briefly.

Every now and again, there's a "third party" in the USA, which basically means people from party A leave it, stay solo for several years, and then join the other party. This is how the two parties change places sometimes. It has happened a bunch of times, like when the Progressives moved from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.
This is also why I have this crazy theory that the Socialists will move away from the Democrat party, and join the Republicans around 2030 or so, and make them into commies, while Democrats remain BigBiz.

Use margin or go to a bank / credit union and draw up a loan.
I personally I wouldn't bother doing that until there is a sizeable 'dip' aka a correction or crash.
Robinhood also takes a few days to actually draw the funds from your bank so you can buy a few days in advance on what is essentially an IOU if you know you have cash coming to cover

The only countries going into lockdown that effect markets are US and China.
The rest of the world going into lockdown just accelerates the adoption rates of software and automation which is bullish for big tech.
As long as I can keep getting some kind of steady cash flow whether it is from my job or unemployment, lock everything except my gym down.

Gotta be honest with you, Anon. Taking out a loan for stocks is not a great idea.

My dip buying power is gold. I still have a few kilo left and I will throw them into the market if there is a good dip.
I did so back in April and I don't regret it obviously

I was green on Apple for about an hour, before slowly drifting back to red.
Should I just sell at a loss, because I doubt Apple is going to recover to its ATH in the next six months. I don't want them keeping my money hostage.
But on the other hand, even a 4% loss is a significant sum, since Apple is my biggest position.

>employment is still sky high
I feel like you meant to say unemployment
Unemployment isn't even real bro. The only sectors to experience significant layoffs are in the hospitality industry which isn't part of the real economy. Bartenders getting laid off doesn't really shape investor confidence in the market.
Also, you need to go look at bond rates which are pathetically low.
There is essentially no other alternative for money right now which is why everyone is just pumping it into the various markets.
If interest rates and/or bond rates go up significantly thats when you should start to act accordingly. However, fed already said interest rates aren't budging for at least 3 years.
By the time we get to that 3 year mark the IMF will possibly have a digital currency ready which will further inflate asset prices but hey, keep sitting on cash lmfao
