I wanted to buy 30 shares of Tencent (700) there instead of the OTC traded ADR (TCEHY), and ran into some issues. I know the exchange is closed now, but I wanted to place the order now, since I'll be sleeping when it's actually open.
I'm using Interactive Brokers and received the message "Order size is incorrect; it should be a multiple of 100".
Can I actually not trade less than 100 shares in Hong Kong?

what's interesting is we've been on threshold securities list starting 9/22 which means (0.5% * 65.16 = 325,800) five consecutive days of over 325,000 shares failed to deliver should have started 9/15, but instead go as far back as 9-10 (even earlier if not for the small drop on 9-9)
for contrast in the previous month of August the median number of FTD was 20,201 the minimum was 415 and the max was one outlier of 347,372 (next highest number was 70,632)
Makes me think that for the second half of September the true numbers were 1M + shares a day FTD

After 13 days (at the longest) naked shorts have to be immediately delivered via market buy per regulation SHO

when we hit short interest > shares outstanding there was a lot of speculation whether or not this means there was naked shorting.
The S3 guy argued no: https://www.shortsight.com/short-interest-of-float-2-0/ it's just there are more shares floating around because each short sale "creates a new share" so to speak

The SEC data seems to suggest otherwise. If my hunch based on the first half of September is right, then were talking 10-15 M shares naked shorted. That's basically the entire growth in the SI and a fifth of the public float

You never really trade foreigns because the spreads are really fucked on most, you mostly just invest in them. Only real way to trade without getting fucked over in liquidity is through sponsored ADRs.

Depends on the exchange rules, sometimes you have to buy by even lot aka 100 shares per or in certain price increments. You're better off buying the ADRs then calling IB to get them to force a conversion since it's required by SEC regulations, which even then they're going to slap a conversion+fx fee rate on top of it.

No, as in you can get the foreign shares by buying the ADR and ringing up a broker over at IB to ask them to trade in the said ADRs for the shares. Depositary bank has to honor it, but you will get hit by the share conversion and any fx fees in relation to doing the converting. I personally buy and hold some international stocks, mainly european. Most of the world are pretty backwards on how their exchanges work in relation to US.

They do allow odd lots, however if you're intending on trading foreign ordinary shares you need to beware of liquidity and spreads, on top of fx conversion rates since some countries are not part of the eurozone and iirc EU has a short selling ban in place. The reality is that everyone here should only be picking individual stocks for fun. the bulk of your investments should go into mutual/index funds or if you really want to bet on a sector (like tech) then invest in ETFs.

Starting boomer investing early in life and living frugally is the fool-proof way to obtain wealth. everyone wants to think they're the except to the rule but we're not. do the work and get good if you can, but realize it'll be a massive time investment in an effort to beat the market when you could invest the time differently and still make 8-12% returns.

I'm Swiss, so whether I have to convert CHF into USD or EUR doesn't make much of a difference to me. The commission is slightly larger in the European market, but by maybe a dollar or two.
I also intend to mainly hold long-term, so bans on short-selling aren't a huge issue, and the European stocks I might want to hold are big enough that volume shouldn't be a huge issue. In particular, I was looking at Kering (KER) which has an average daily volume of 170k. Far below any bigger US stock of course, but not an issue for longing stocks for months or years.
