The chainlink ICO happend in two steps. The first one was a presale where you had contribute at least 100eth to enter. The second the open ICO. $29/$30 million was contributed in the presale. To contribute to the presale you had to get whitelisted, some anons did and shared their whitelisted presale address so they could pool together for the buy-in. Altough it seemed like multiple personal addresses could contribute to the same presale address, and each get their tokens distributed fairly, there was no guarantee. A couple smart contracts was therefore set up to ensure tokens woud be distributed fairly. (An instance of said contract that actually got filled: 0x2880f03f181ee0967a00bac5346574f58f91b615)

Around and after the ICO the fundamentals of the project were discussed in vigorous detail. Of course FUD was around back then too, and actually had some merit. Some of the most prominent being "2 man team scam" and "just a jsoon parser". This is also the time were a lot of the OG memes were created, some which still see use today. This era of the fundamentals being discussed ended somewhere mid 2018 i belive. Most of what could be discussed had been discussed, and the general consensus was that chainlink, if executed properly by the team, would eventually be top 10, if not top 3 on CMC.

The second era would be that of FUD, FUD, and more FUD. People were waiting for development to be finished and frankly grew bored. I would say most FUD was either created by link holders that wanted to deter newfags, or were just bored. During this time, any post about chainlink on major crypto subreddits would get brigaded. Any actual good information would get downvoted, and FUD upvoted (thereby also proving reddit's flaw related to free speach compared to 4chan, IMO). Comments warning redditors about Link as a 4chan scam were also prevalent.

Great way to put it Anon. One thing I'd like to add is that FUD is still being posted on Reddit to this very day!

based old fag. I bought in late 2017 and I think the consensus was pretty strong in early 2018 because of those breadcrumbs and LARPers

I missed presale and got into ICO.

29/32m were sold out, you had to be really fucking quick to get in and people were pissed when they couldn't get in, that's why most of the fud started. Also binance listing LINK without getting permission from the team is what made the price low for so long.
