I’ve heard of a few banks changing their Terms of Business to allow for digital currencies, but on that front I know no more than you - I’m on the investment banking side, so don’t get involved in anything to do with retail.

I’ve already spoken to our London ops head and he hasn’t seen/heard anything, but that’s not indicative at all as we use correspondent banks for transfers anyway here, so we wouldn’t use XRP at any point.

The tech guys would need to be speaking with ops as they’re the ones that would use the system. It would need to plumb in to all the other systems that the ops guys use (eg onboarding systems, regulatory compliance systems, confirmations systems - all of it).

My point I guess is this: I understand ripple have been forming these partnerships and onboarding banks to RippleNet (or similar), with the idea being that they would all quickly be able to switch on to ODL once everything is in place. For this to be the case, banks would need to already be set up and plumbed in. I can try to find out whether that is the case for my bank, but what I don’t want is to ask if we are on RippleNet and Be told “no”, only to find out there’s actually another system that accesses ODL which I could have checked on.

Obviously, just because my place isn’t ready, it wouldn’t mean that others aren’t. It may however prove to be confirmation that something is happening if we are ready.

So, I’ve yet to speak to our ops head, but did speak to a transaction banker (acting as banker to other banks and facilitating payments) and a few things to note:

1. he was very much aware of Ripple and mentioned XRP unprompted.
2. mentioned an Indian bank partnering with them to facilitate cross border payments between their offices.
3. He’s aware of discussions with ripple about payment corridors between Singapore and Australia using XRP.
4. Bankers are generally not keen on crypto due to AML/KYC (source of funds) issues, so he thinks it would have to be an almost closed system (banks only transferring their own XRP between each other).
5. ISO22 implementation over the course of September 21 - 22.
6. As one of you mentioned (and I, it seems, incorrectly disputed), he thinks internal discussions right now would only be theoretical - with our IT to establish feasibility - rather than live.
7. In conjunction with the discussions around sing/aus corridor, he did mention the issue of FX rates. This suggests to me that the switch and a stable working price would have to happen pre-adoption.

Will see what ops guy says later and let you know.

I would note that we’re not a Tier 1 bank and although we’ve been mentioned alongside ripple a few times, we’re a pretty risk averse place, so I wouldn’t necessarily expect us to be at the vanguard.

Anyway, while nothing he said is exactly inside information, hopefully you find the view from someone on the ground at a bank useful.

It’s a good question. I think the concern would be more about banks sourcing liquidity from exchanges - where they don’t know who is on the other side. I think that suggests ripple would need to pass on their holdings to BIS or similar to act as the source of liquidity.

For retail holders, I think there is a gap in the market whereby a bank could simply apply higher AML/KYC standards (prove your income, identity, etc.) and buy directly from the holder. Certainly, there’ll be some banks out there willing to do this if it means they can generate a spread (but slightly below market from us and sell at market to other banks).

Ultimately though - that’s his personal view and not an official one, so it may just be that he’s wrong on that point. He did specifically mention BTC/XMR when talking to that point.

well, they've been testing out these networks in closed systems already, for the last few years- specifically the BIS and IMF and Federal Reserve, and other central banks like BoE and BoCanada, but they test them in 'sandboxes' or closed systems first. perhaps this is just a larger trial involving more players before the entire system switches over.
