Yeh, I was talking to one if I our repo traders today and it doesn’t look good for financial markets - bond markets are likely to flatline and equity markets seem to have lost touch with reality (though they seem to be assuming a Trump win, which is something). The lending business is going to get tougher (we expect a number of refi’s looking for lower rates), the swaps market is quieter and the FX side has been dealing with compressed margins for forever. I can’t really see where we generate the revenue in the US.

As far as derivatives, it is and it isn't.

Taking a very simplified (excluding and credit spread, etc.), FX Swap:

assume 1.20 USD to GBP

On day 1, we trade a spot $120mn for £100mn (you buying GBP from me) and agree a forward settling on day 30 where I'll buy back the GBP from you. In reality the forward rate would be different to the spot (reflecting a view on where the rate is going to be in 30 days), but for ease, let's agree the same 1.20:1 rate.

The notional value is $120mn (or both $120mn + £100mn, depending on accounting technique).

What actually matters in the ordinary course of things though is the MtM - how much has the rate shifted away from our assumed forward rate and in which direction has it shifted.

If in 30 days it's $1.3:1, I'm buying back my GBP for $120mn against the £100mn whereas the actual value should be $130mn to £100mn.Your exposure is $10mn that you've 'lost' because you've agreed to sell me my GBP back for a lower than market price.

This can be mitigated by collateralising, so i'll call daily margin to ensure i'm covering the MtM.

The notional generally only comes into play if a party goes bankrupt, because at that point the other party is getting at best cents on the dollar or at worst, nothing.

The 'quadrillion' market is therefore a bit misleading - the actual MtMs are much lower (

Didn't actually answer your question - XRP (in my understanding) could be used as collateral on the trade,
it could be used to net the transfers: adding up all the trades we have on, i owe you today £100mn (translating to 100XRP) and you owe me $150mn (130XRP) - how about you just send me the 30XRP difference here, or
it could just be for quick settlement of the transfers: here is the £100mn I owe you - converted to XRP and sent through the (fats, cheap, secure and immutable) system for you to convert back to whatever ccy you actually want.
