I feel your pain, anon. What’s up with your reno? I’m in the middle of building a custom house for myself on a decent chunk of land in the middle of nowhere, and my contractors just barely acquired the rest of the building materials to complete my house before the market and product quality went to shit. Lumber in my area is easily 3-4x normal prices now, and it’s absolutely shit quality. The big production builders have cornered the market on remaining materials and the only currently available materials are both super expensive and garbage in quality. Lumber, stone, and concrete is all affected out here. I got a heads-up on this materials squeeze a few months back by my investment banker and piled 6 figures into NAIL in late April. It’ll keep printing as long as this shortage continues, as it’s up 3x from my initial buy.

FUCK no. If you're going to debt with finance, use something really low interest. Get a student loan and bullshit your way through school. Do NOT fucking go to a cash advance place and take out some interest you can not afford. Safety nets are important too, but you've got to be bullish at the same time. If you come in to any money with low interest, put it right into something like NIO or an emerging pharma. Go with obscure niche companies with great potential but you have to do your research.

Do not fucking go to cash advance places. Please for the love of god don't do that. If you're looking for investment funds, like i said, enrol in some classes and use your over-saturated student loans with low interest for it.

Life is bullshit and you're not the first person to edge on bankruptcy. Extraordinary people can pull out of it and be hugely successful but that's literally on them to do so.

Advice for you, young man? I'd tell you once again to use your head and not your heart. Do what is rational and not what is immediately rewarding. If you can't find success in the drab of regular life, you're probably meant for something much greater, so use that as a positive message. We're all trying to make it, we're all trying to adapt and survive, so if you can't find success inside the box, get out of that trap and be who you were meant to be.

It's not realistic to own a home at 25 anymore. It's not realistic to be out of debt at 70 in 2050.

What I can offer to you is that getting married is a great decision because having two incomes is very useful.

Worrying about it is crippling and you'll find that it will only make you feel worse and lower the chances of even getting to that step.

The most vital thing I would tell you is to take it one step at a time and know what you want. Do you want a family? How do you get it? Get a plan, man. There's six steps to solving a problem and it really can be that easy:

1) Know your problem
2) Build your plan
3) Execute
4) Work your fucking balls off
5) Conclusion to your effort
6) Pass/Fail. If you pass, what went right? If you fail, what went wrong

Repeat. Survive.

In the 5th year of my PhD in a biotech-related field. Stipend is 30k/year.

Pretty sure I'm not gonna make it bros. Won't be able to afford a house until I'm 40. Looks like I might make $100k/year if I go right into industry. Girlfriend/future wife is in investment banking but our relationship is not going well right now.

Lost out on so much earnings in my 20s. No traditional IRA as a student and my Roth only has a few thousand in it. Could have been making 50-60k a year + 5% or more raise per year if I took a job right out of college.

Would feel a lot more comfy if I had 3-400k invested at this point.

Kind of want to pull out of my ETFs and put 40k into a shitcoin and pray it 10x but I would probably kms if I lost it all. Took me nearly a decade to save up this much.

desu i went to a good school, but through that i interned at my job and got a return offer. was able to work with that so i could get my masters in a year and join then. was a mistake in hindsight as i'd have had more money to spend -> more btc

so i don't really have good advice in terms of applying from outside since i got really lucky.

if your apps are getting insta rejected then maybe you'd benefit from having someone refer you if you know anyone at said companies. otherwise i think you might want to position yourself to stand out a bit more, though i don't really have solid advice for this... a lot of what i would think would come down to luck (start-up you join being successful or getting acquired, etc). perhaps worth evaluating what your skills are, if your company is helping you grow them, and if not, if you can make it so your company does, either with your team or by getting buy-in for something you think would improve your org. if the company doesn't fit what you want to do, maybe consider following that passion more into some company related to that? i really don't know... lastly maybe you could try stepping up, applying to companies that are good and known for eng talent but not household names (yet, if you can aim for that). these companies naturally have more opportunity which gives you more room to figure out what your specific strengths are and how to better apply them. remember, eng is not just about coding and being smart, a lot of it comes down to people skills, communication and interactions between teams. if you have vision this is really helpful

I should have majored in CS as an undergrad. Do you think there is any place in tech companies for a PhD with neuro focus? My dissertation is not super quantitative but I'm thinking of getting a CS certification on the side, offered by my university which is top 10 in US. Undergrad major was biology.

Don't want to stay in academia. Don't enjoy the environment and definitely don't want to spend the rest of my life teaching college kids, even if I get to run my own lab.

Do you have any programming experience? A PhD would definitely help you get a foot in the door at a big tech company, but they will expect some degree of competence. Basically you just need to get past the interviews which can easily be gamed. For some practical experience I would honestly recommend a coding bootcamp or do a self-directed one like the Odin project.

Besides that, keep going anon. A PhD is something to be proud of regardless. I barely scrapped through getting my bachelors in IT.

>desu i went to a good school
figured it'd be something like that

too bad I was a vidya addicted retard until 21; ruined my academic momentum completely.

yeah, as you say, I guess my best shot is either networking or somehow making my applications stand out (tbf they were pretty half-assed); maybe it's just easier to settle for a t2 company or making it on my own

I can build anything within reason (CTO/tech lead for a startup that makes no money lul), but I don't know how to sell being an academically handicapped generalist to a FAANG company

anyway thanks for your input and sorry for the blogpost

did you go to school? it's hard to get into faang with no degree but if you are as competent as you say i believe you could do it by focusing on something you're passionate about within the field and becoming an expert in that. people always have a lower bar for 'expert' than you'd think, and with confidence and knowing to always overestimate time and overdeliver based on shittier expectations you can go far

I'm effectively self taught, but I have an AP degree in Comp Sci; it was basically a glorified coding bootcamp, unironically complete shit tier degree for brainlets; doubt it has any value in an application unless the recruiter somehow mistakes it for a better degree because they see "comp sci" in the title

I guess it's easier to market yourself as being really strong in one aspect; problem is most of my "strengths" are in cookie cutter technologies like MERN-stack - like ultra pragmatic skillset to build most applications, but doesn't sound impressive to someone looking for extraordinary

My project has involved some programming but nothing close to software development. Computational modeling w/ MatLab, statistics and data visualization with R, and some custom analysis scripts in C.

I think I would do one of my school's certification programs before I paid for one of those boot camps. I am 90% self taught besides two CS courses I took in college so I've probably developed some bad habits.

im not familiar with what you mentioned, but if you're familiar with Java/OOP languages then I would recommend learning iOS and Android engineering. both are kind of trivial once you get the swing of things and start to look more like frameworks on top of the language itself. mobile is really marketable at big companies and Java/Kotlin/Swift will all be in demand for a while i think

>> No.22103747

>>22103429
shit that might actually be a good idea; actually already have some experience with mobile dev and I've also heard elsewhere it's in high demand

going digital nomad in ~2 months; I could probably churn out some stuff pretty fast + spend some time making it look attractive to recruiters (portfolio website, updated github, etc.) and then pray

I'm at a company in the same comp range of FAANG and was a vidya addicted retard from 19-21. I even failed a bunch of units in my degree. Interviews can be practiced, you can get a recruiter to look at your resume with a referral. It's all a shit test to see how much you want it. They get literally millions of applications, they have to filter somehow.

I was actually contacted via recruiter on LinkedIn to attend a hiring event because I met the years of experience and language requirement.

If you can get an onsite, it doesn't matter if you fail. You've significantly improved your chances of getting in because now you're on their books - they'll probably call you again unless you called the interviewer some racial slur, also now you know where the bar is.

I've been an interviewer on events, and it's very slightly easier to get an offer this way, the bar isn't lower just more likely they'll bring you to onsite stage. Facebook are hiring like crazy at the moment, but note their interviews are brutal for those that didn't prepare.
