Don't do it unless you know where you're buying. Many places in the "heart of Athens" are absolute no-go zones, to the level of the Paris housing projects.
Having said that, specific districts are very safe and have incredible value for money. Chinese investors have been buying in bulk recently, so much so that there are advertisements in Chinese in the centre of Athens.

For those of you that are thinking of investing, I can give some advice.

He's probably a student advising you to buy in his favourite city. Thessaloniki is famous for being where students flock, and it does have its charms. However, it lacks very basic infrastructure and governmental services, and I doubt that will be fixed in the next 15 years. You could still buy a block of flats and rent it out to students if you want to be a slumlord, but then you're risking having to deal with squatters.

Buy in a developing Athens neighbourhood or in an island.

Northern districts are as safe as anything in northern Europe. Kifisia, Amarousion Heraklio, Nea Ionia are all for upper-middle class people, with minimal crime.

The more you go to the south, the more things get worse and you need insider knowledge. Kypseli, Gkyzi, Victoria, Omonoia and many more are so horrible that migrants will steal the gas from your car's tank if you park overnight.

The Chinese are buying dead centre: Monastiraki, Plaka, Thiseion and some of the districts that surround them. These are absolute tourist hot-spots, relatively safe, and can generate incredible revenue.

It always depends on what is your risk tolerance. North for low risk, south for high, centre for a good balance. Higher risk comes with higher reward, of course.
