I lived in Thailand for 4 years. I moved to japan to marry my fiancé whom I’ve been with for 5 years. I reluctantly left because I had a good job and friends but I have the chance to retire in Okinawa, which is also based and more smooth long term. But if I were to live anywhere again it would be thailand or Laos (very similar to thailand but more underdeveloped and slow paced).

Thailand will make you or break you. Most expats have extra baggage and suffer as a result of cultural differences and disparate upbringing. I think their biggest vice is theft and you have to be careful when conducting business or taking cabs, etc. They also love to gossip and because they’re village oriented they love to share one another’s information, so only share as much as you want known. It’s not bad if you understand this basic principle. And is quite endearing when everyone is on each other’s level. Still, this is psychologically disparate from how westerners operate and can induce anger and prissiness. Thais are also not the smartest bunch in the world, but they are excellent with their hands. Traffic is a problem in Bangkok and many things are inefficient. Missed food orders, traffic accidents, lateness, and all other kinds of inefficiency is normal. Learn to accept that this is part and parcel of who they are. The worst part about Thailand is immigration. Among the top 5 most frustrating and difficult immigration processes in the world for just about any visa. Tri monthly reporting of residence, annual proof of marriage for spouse visa, etc. Read about it yourself, this will take the most patience if your employer is incompetent. Even then immigration laws change on the fly. But once you’re set it’s smooth sailing until you change jobs or get divorced lol. It’s not fun.

Still, thailand is replete with kind hearted people. Amazing food, arguably the best in the world. Condos are affordable and very comfortable. Beautiful weather/scenery. Just open ur heart.

Japan is without a doubt the best place to go. Not a major city, but somewhere 10-15km out. I traveled for work for 5 years straight, went to over 100 different cities around the world, have been pretty much everywhere notable. Thailand is the ONLY place in the world that gave me culture shock. Bangkok...jesus...imagine a massive city where every street corner is as congested as Times Sq and everyone comes up to begging for money because its a 3rd world country. The ladyboys honestly look like aliens, they all put these neon contacts in their eyes to make them standout. They have tits like a woman but a build of a man, its all very uncanny valley. If you go down the street where all the stripclubs and whores are you get harassed and grabbed constantly, I remember thinking damn this is what girls must feel like, its honestly kind of terrifying when its coming from the sketchiest humans you can think of. I went into a whorehouse as well to fuck some prostitutes and the guy brought out a bunch of 14 year old girls who looked terrified as he said "fresh fresh!". It was legit human trafficking shit going on and I was so turned off i left immediately. Also you can completely throw any regard for human life out the window. I traveled to some of the coast and islands as well and I shit you not, every 4th tourist has a severe bandage or injury somewhere on their body. There is no safety code standards here and the amount of people the fuck themselves up riding a moped or a tuktuk is far too high. In my time there, 2 tourists died and one of them I saw die as he went for a swim in the water. A local waverunner riding around didn't see his head bobbing in the water and ran into him, dude literally died on the beach sand with his friends crying around him. Honestly fuck this whole place. Hell on earth.
