my take is that Vitalik and Sergey see the use case of blockchain and what it can/should do as being completely different things. Vitalik is sort of an autistic utopia idealist who sees blockchains creating some new society. He's also living in a world of autistic numbers and equations in such a debilitating way that he is almost like an alien not able to understand subtlety. Sergey sees the use of smart contracts and blockchain in general as a business application that can merge with the traditional way we do things, and also make the people who use it lots of money.
