A call is an agreement that the buyer will buy shares from the seller for the strike price up until the expiration date in exchange for a premium that the seller receives.
If you own shares and sell a call, you've agreed to sell your shares for the strike price and receive the premium as compensation.
If you buy XYZ for 10 and sell a covered call for 11 strike price for a 1$ premium (x100 shares), you earn money if the shares go down, sideways or up. If they go up too far then you lost out on potential gains (which is what the buyer earned) but you still made a profit. You sold your shares which you purchased for 10 for essentially 12 when you factor in the premium.

im trying to write a covered call using fidelity. i guess im retarded, because when i try to set a strike price above the current price, and use 8/21 expiration, my max gain is always 0.00, my loss is unlimited, and my break even is (for say a stock currently at $8.80, strike price set for $12.50) like $87. that cannot be right. can someone help?

I dated a local girl who worked for the gov't but many young people in their 20s leave to work in the EU for higher pay. The young people who stay like to drink and party so if that's not your scene you might not like it.
Oh and if you're American you will 100% be watched by the government security services. You'll notice it after a few days and get really freaked out but after a while you won't care. As someone who's been buying WKHS since below $1.50: it's probably because of all the hullabaloo over the past few days about Trump's appointee supposedly undermining the USPS.

The market has basically priced in a scenario where nobody gets the USPS deal. That's not really realistic. In reality the negotiations are going on as planned. Here's news from yesterday:

https://www.trucks.com/2020/08/11/postal-service-mail-truck-replacement-contract/

The lack of enthusiasm is causing a lack of volume. Smart investors are gradually accumulating as much as they can at $15.

WKHS's truck will save the USPS a lot of money in cost per mile and upkeep. I don't think you realize the scale of the USPS' footprint. There's hubs everywhere. Charging stations in the hubs will create a net that covers the routes. WKHS is a small company yes but it has a real product and the means to produce them. Even if the contract gets split between WKHS and Ford/Oshkosh that's still $3.3B for WKHS and the USPS contract is just one side of their products.

EVs do not decrease maintenance costs. They are just as expensive as regular cars, if not even more so because they require so many specialized parts and their warranties are often wonky. Then there's the extra cost of electrics, which will be an automatic fail because the current government mindset with funding and acquiring is immediate costs first and fuck the long-term/quality.
It gets even worse when you consider that load-bearing vehicles will put even more pressure on the batteries and the engine, and yes these vehicles still have engines and plenty of moving parts, which will drive maintenance costs even higher.
They want new vehicles because all of their current vehicles are at least 26 years old, as that's when the current line was last produced. Plenty are even older than that. They were great trucks when they were made but they're still at least a quarter of a decade old and were put through punishing conditions of daily driving with lots of a stopping and going.
The post office will not be buying electric vehicles. If that's why you're buying WKHS then your entire reasoning base is flawed from the beginning.
