That depends.
If you only hold that link for a year or less it is a short term capital gain and you pay a significant 30% on it.
If however it takes 1.5 years to reach that $20, you will pay long term capital gains tax which is much much less.

In short, if you're getting into crypto investing, go for long term capital gains. Also exchanging one crypto for another counts as a sell point, so don't try to play the market by just switching link for BTC whenever you think a correction will occur and then switch back, as technically you'll have to pay taxes on that (though as long as the IRS gets something they usually won't look into it too much). Just keep track of what you're buying and how much of it you've purchased in a given year. Then you can wait 1 year and 1 day and sell that much if you desire for long term capital gains.

I should amend my post here a bit. I arbitrarily said 30% but it really depends on your yearly income, as that's wherethe rate fluctuates. That said long term capital gains are not considered income, short term gains are. Which means if you make $50k from crypto investments and sell before a year, that $50k not only gets taxed harder for being a short term capital gain but it is considered part of that year's income and can move you up a tax bracket. If you make $50k after 2 years and cash out, that is not considered part of your income for the year.

I'm trying hard not to sell too much too early. I dont need any money right now so am planning not to sell anything until at least 100. that means holding whole I have upwards of 10mil. that might sound crazy, but if link succeeds, its not a question of speculation & trying to time the top. the multipliers are so big, and get bigger the higher the price goes. the difference between selling 10k @ 50 & 10k @ 100 is half a mill. and only gets more extreme the higher the price. that being said, depending on when it hits 100, I'm planning to sell around 20-30k then to get 2-3 mill, then I'll stake some & hold the majority of the rest indefinitely. can't see any other asset I'd rather be in

It was my plan to sell 10k at $10 and treat myself to some stuff perhaps a car etc. But with corona there really isn't much opportunity to be spending money and having fun right now so haven't sold really any yet. With all the recent LINK developments, and crypto seemingly entering a bullrun, selling now doesn't seem that logical.
