21122084 No.21122084 [Reply] [Original]

Is there room to discuss TCG investing in /biz/? We're talking sealed product, magic the gathering, pokemon, yuigoh, sports cards, and other collectible cards. A lot of these products have upwards growth in value over 5 to 10 years and act like a fiat currency.

Thoughts? I personally was really lucky and managed to buy a 2000s first edition sealed booster box of Pokemon Gym Challenge for $1000CAD, meanwhile the box is selling for ~$16k online, and will only see continued upwards growth as it gets rarer. Also been trying to hoard Pokemon Hidden Fates product, a collector's booster box of MTG Ikoria on the way, and preorders of the new Zendikar Rising Set booster boxes.

What about you?
Is there value in investing in trading cards or is it a poor mans fund?
Have you had any sealed product jump up in value, or any market suggestions?
Do you have any product coming in?
Pulled/found any valuable singles, or restricted list cards?

I know pokemon cards have seen a really high surge in value mostly due to nostalgia factors I think. Lots of 90 kids searching for old cards to get the rush they felt as kids. Currently there is a sealed booster box of Pokemon Base Set 1 Unlimited (reprint set) selling for $20k on ebay currently. I remember going to Toys R Us as a kid and just haphazardly digging through a bin filled to the brim with Base set booster packs. Wild stuff.

I assume the nostalgia factor also applies to Yugioh as well, but as I understand it there are a lot of reprints of popular cards that might hinder their upward growth in value. Mistake me if I'm wrong.

Also, I'm not a sports card guy, so any insight into how those markets are acting would be interesting to hear.

Well the real money seems to be in purchasing sealed product and holding it for a period of 5 to 10 years like a bond. Some product that contain good cards, the Pokemon set "Burning Shadows" for example released in 2017 and would have cost around $130CAD and now sells for ~$350 sealed now.

Of course, there are valuable cards from older sets (and new sets, the newly released Double Masters for mtg contains a full art foil card called Force of Will that sells for $400USD). It really depends on the cards you have and their condition to give you a value. Come back with a photo and I'll help you out.

But, with $600 you could buy a new charizard if you regret it that much, right?

The Nintendo game Fire Emblem has a Japan only TCG game called Fire Emblem Cipher. It's last set releases Oct this year. So I'm speculating that the sets/sealed product will gain a lot of value due to being OOP and a Nintendo collectible in general. Opened some boosters of that the other day and pulled a card that is valued at around $600CAD.

It's pretty crazy return considering what my bank is giving me lol. But I'm not prepared to buy more, not for now. Feel incredibly risky somehow because it's just cardboard basically. Maybe when I cash out big again after this whole bullrun ends and I got money to spare I'll buy more who knows.

Deadly.

I'm not worried about MTG and Pokemon as >>21123377 suggests. Pokemon is the highest grossing franchise on the planet, and mtg has been around for so long that it isn't going anywhere, and even if the brand collapsed there is enough content in the game that it will maintain a loyal following for decades to come. As cards are essentially fiat, I think they're pretty safe investment. They experience dips with the stock market, but recover, and can't test the bottom, as the sealed product is opened and removed from the pool or bought up and held. This is also why I think talking about it is worthwhile in /biz/.

I probably should make a more structured list of boxes that are releasing/recently released sets to give this thread a little bit more structure.

>> No.21123768

>>21123668
I could suggest a youtube channel called Alpha Investments. It's a fun guy who used to work in the financial market and is now doing MTG for a living. He has some amazing video's about the mtg prices and the stock market. It was because of him I bought some more MTG products for nostalgia.

I really want to get my hands on some of the Mario Pikachu promos but they are going for crazy amounts now.

The new set of pokemon releasing on August 14th - Darkness Ablaze, contains the first Charizard card (always increases the value of the set) for the Sword & Shield series. Followed by the Champion's Path sets later this year, my retailed is already sold out of the Elite Trainer Boxes, so people are really rushing to this set for some reason. There won't be any booster boxes released for it, so I think it will occupy a Hidden Fates/Shining Legends type niche, where the sealed booster packs will drive high secondary prices.

Lastly a new set released in Japan 2 weeks or so agao- Legendary Heartbeat, that had a new rarity of cards, and those have been doing quite well. I'm able to jump through the hoops and order boxes from Amazon JP for like $80CAD and they could be flipped for probably around $120-150/box. Though I'm on the fence on whether to hold or sell.

In the mtg front the new Double Masters and Double Masters VIP boxes dropped. The regular booster boxes were preselling for $360 and the second wave has gone up to $400 already, so I expect upwards of $500/box in a few months. The VIP boxes (premium collection of cards potentially including the Force of Will card I mentioned earlier) are selling for $140 each, though the jury is put on whether these boxes were valued properly.

The Jumpstart set came out earlier this month and was selling for $129/box and has since jumped to $250-300/box. Good investment if you got sealed boxes early.

Lastly Zendikar Rising will be releasing in late September. Zendikar is a popular set in mtg, so I expect that will drive prices up a bit, but the big kicker is that this set will have a new box type "set boxes" that are themed, but also have the potential to include premium signed art cards as a extremely rare pull.

Pretty much all chase summer cards are sold privately, but there is a bgs 9.5 summer usea on cardmarket for 14k euros right now, but that price might not be correct as there are only 2 9.5s in existence and one sold for 17k usd in 2013, just to give an idea of value. I personally dont buy any non reserve list cards as an investment, except first print run foils of staples. Or sealed product (like a box/ case of each new set that comes out). I dont even follow Secret lair stuff and other new premium product I don't agree with the philosophy as WOTC is shifting from not caring about the secondary market, to implicitly using it to price premium products to make even more money, meaning they are now incentivized to keep chase card prices high. But people eat it up so what do I know, that is just my personal opinion, I dont actively collect, I just keep the cards because I enjoyed playing the game.

I think just these limited products have a high potential to appreciate, just due to being limited, but priced as they are, they might just stabilize and stay around their sale price. No way to tell since Secret Lairs are a newer product. The product itself is definitely sold to induce maximum FOMO in people though.

When I started getting into magic earlier this year (just to play at first) I got a few special sets, the MLP limited box set, the Theros secret lair, the Godzilla lands and the Summer Secret Lair drop. Sadly, I opened my Theros boxes, so those aren't sealed anymore, but I learnt a lesson. So far the MLP sets have gained the most value I believe.

The Year of the Rat secret lair is selling for ~$80CAD, so that is around +33% after shipping in Canada.

Right now I'd suggest trying to buy a few SEALED World Championship celebration envelopes and hold them since it's one of the only limited print commodities that Konami has produced ever.
