Leveraged ETFs like TQQQ grow or decline at an amplified rate compared to the indexes they track. Their baseline resets each day.

What this means is that if the tracking index drops 10%, a 3x leveraged ETF will drop 30%. The next day, the tracking index might grow 10%, which means the leveraged ETF will also grow 30%. But think about what that means:

A 3x leveraged ETF starting at 100 and dropping 30% will put it at 70. The next day, if that same index grows 30%, that puts it at 91, because 30% of 70 is 21, not 30. Leveraged ETFs need their underlying index to have more upward than downward momentum to regain their original value.

Not to mention the fact that the jobs numbers from the BLS are contradictory to other establishments, like the Census who showed that it's worsening, as with unemployment insurance. Stonks are broken because nobody wants bonds that don't even keep up with inflation. Nobody that knows how it works wants to be in the dollar as the government tosses trillions of dollars around. Bear in mind that even a non-leveraged index or stock that falls 10% one day and rises 10% the next will not quite have reached its initial value, but the difference will be smaller.

TQQQ has only existed since 2010 or so, but *if* it began trading in the 1980s and followed the same principles it does now, a 10K investment from the get-go would have ballooned into nearly 10 million, and the dot com crash would have taken its value back to nearly 10K again. Its subsequent growth into 2020 would have taken it back to around 500K, which is still a dramatic gain, but presents superficially as if the base index never returned to its original value. Which is actually wrong; the Nasdaq is way higher now than it was at the peak of the dot com bubble.

This seems bizarre and counter-intuitive until you consider what happens when the underlying index drops 90% over the course of half a year or so. That doesn't mean the leveraged index drops 270%, because that's not possible, but it does drop three times as much each day as its underlying index drops. So if the Nasdaq was dropping 10%, then 15%, then 8%, then growing 2%, then dropping 12%, etc. etc., a leveraged ETF tracking it would see its value obliterated almost to the status of a penny stock. And you can see then how % gains during the subsequent recovery, measured against that ridiculously small value, would take a long time to compound.

So this might be a retarded question, but should I be investing more than around $200 per stock if I actually want to be making money? I have 9 tickers in my portfolio and around $2600 invested overall. Currently I'm up 4.6% over that but I'm guessing I could potentially be up higher if I had put larger amounts into fewer tickers. >> No.21106141

No bro, it literally is the exact same as the ETF it tracks except it uses leverage. For example the most popular here is TQQQ which is the Triple leveraged version of QQQ (hence the T at the front). It basically does 3x whatever QQQ does but if goes down and stays down the negative returns compound.

Let's say you're playing vidya and your character has a skill that let's them regen health with every enemy they kill but also has a skill that let's them amplify damage at the cost of health drain.
If your kill rate exceeds your health drain you get a fat damage bonus but if you don't get any kills you just bleed to death.
Idk if that makes sense but the stock market is just one giant game anyway so might as well explain it like one.

>Bear in mind that even a non-leveraged index or stock that falls 10% one day and rises 10% the next will not quite have reached its initial value, but the difference will be smaller.
Adding to that. Etfs with leverage <1 can go up while the underlying goes down. The effect is not very substantial though. The decay effect grows quadratically to the leverage. 1 has 1 decay unit. Lev 2 has 4. Lev 3 has 9. If you lose 1% you don't have to make much extra to get back to normal. 1/0.99 = 1.0101..(1.01%)
A drop by 99% would absolutely wreck you as you need 1/0.01 = 10 (1000%) to get back to break even. Higher leverage etfs therefore work well in a low volatility bull market but don't do as well in a high volatility bull market and go broke in a high volatility flat market. spxl worked well in the not so far past but Jnug looks fugly. Jnug is small cap miners, a by default very volatile sector which hasn#t seen much bull until recently.

TQQQ is exceptional in that it tracks an index (the Nasdaq) which happens to have had stratospheric growth through 2010-2020. It's a sampling bias, basically. That's not to say tech is going to stop growing through the 2020s, just that bagholding TQQQ is assuming that the Nasdaq's growth spurts will outpace its selloffs in the long run.

I would just rather hold stocks.

The short answer is they can't stop him, but he doesn't have the power to do all the things that would have been in the bill. It's also important to remember that the Dems broadened the powers of executive action in 2014 before the mid terms so Obama wouldn't get mogged by the incoming all Rep congress, and now that Trump's in office they want to act like that doesn't count anymore.

Depends on my entry point and the flow of the market. It isn't like I run some deep calculation and plot out graphs for TA or anything. Just look at the percentage moves that your stock is making on average for the week. You want to set trailing stop on a percentage based on your risk tolerance. If you think things are going to be shaky/downhill (like this week was shaping out to be) you'll wanna coil that percentage up a bit so that it can still snag a decent profit on the way down.

You can also set trailing stop losses in pieces to average down, which you definitely should take advantage of if you're heavily invested in a stock - nothing stings worse than selling ALL shares on a dip only to have it rebound into a V-recovery 1 hour later, So if you have 50 shares of TQQQ and think it's going to crash, you'd probably wanna do 10 share selloffs at specific dipping ranges, possibly incrementing as it falls further (again, up to what your strategy is).

If you're dealing with something really fucky like TQQQ then you'll want to reassess your stop losses at least once a day, but if you're setting your percentages correctly for the trailing stops then it should scale without much maintenance. I mostly utilize hard stops for my entry point. Like if I'm trying to time a bottom, you can hard stop before you baghold a falling knife. You can use hard stop losses if you feel more comfortable with manually adjusting your position all the time. It may be good practice doing so for a week or two anyway just so you can get the hang of it.
