No it doesn't you fucking retard. A fork literally means they're copying eth and running it as a separate network of their own.

In this case it's not even a fork of the blockchain, it's actually a fork of the code which means they're starting the network from the first block.

Blockchains are just decentralized databases. They store some state and apply updates through the cooperation of the network instead of through an authoritative server.

A blockchain "fork" just means there is some kind of disagreement among the network about which version of the database is correct. Usually this is caused by a software update.

For example, if you apply an update which makes transactions of type X invalid but only 50% of the network applies the patch...then when a transaction of type X shows up half the network will accept it and update their version of the database, call it D1, and half the network will reject it and update their version of the database, call it D2. Now you have 2 versions of the database floating around and it's unclear which one is correct.

This is why you want to wait until 95%+ of the network has applied a patch before activating it. Then, even if a small % of the network disagree their version of the database will be ignored and eventually abandoned when those nodes update.

Something like this occurred after the DAO hack. Most of the network voted to refund the DAO but a non-trivial minority fought this intervention and refused to recognize the refund. The main ETH chain has forcibly refunded the DAO but a rival database version exists which has allowed the hacker to keep his tokens. This rival version is called ETC.

DO NOT CONFUSE THESE WITH CODE FORKS!

A code fork is simply when you take some piece of code, copy it, and start your own project. This is what JPMorgan is doing with Ethereum, which is open-source by design. JPMorgan is essentially just creating an alt-coin whose code is based on Ethereum's. It is NOT "just an update to Ethereum".

>> No.2090484

>>2090444
it doesn't matter whose fork it is, the point is not the literal amount of eth it consumes it's the fact that it demonstrates the viability of the technology.

>> No.2090491

no u are wrong, ethereum is setup so that a hard fork is an update, and for this its just a implementation its a parallel network to ethereum they are still using eth watch my video where i explain this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmZcwZ3HE54

>> No.2090527

A fork of Ethereum is NOT just an update. A fork of a blockchain isn't an update either. It was essentially an 'update' in the case of the famous Ethereum hard fork, but only in the sense that miners agreed on it.

JP Morgan working with a fork of the Ethereum codebase means that they are NOT using ether and therefore there's no intrinsic reason that this demo should increase the price of eth. However at the last EEA there were presentations about the possibly of using private chains for enterprise with inter-enterprise transactions across the public chain, so any developments of Ethereum for use in private chains may affect price positively, aswell as having benefits for Ethereum as a project.

By 'inter' (i.e. between) I mean, say, from Party A to Party B. By 'intra' I'd mean transactions within just Party A based on their own internal DAPP. Internal transactions (i.e. all within Party A) could of course occur without a public chain if that's what a company wanted to do, but obviously yeah, you'd need the public chain to transact between companies under this scheme.

Again, that's why I'm long eth. I think Quorum will be highly beneficial to businesses and, in turn, the Ethereum project (and the price of eth).

I did.
Sold my XRP at 2370 and bought ETH at 472
XRP is going to bounce around for a while but it's a huge bubble. Explain to me how ripple has a market cap greater than ETH? It's going the way of Monero, Dash and LTC. No doubt

I don't short crypto anymore because of its' volatility, the exchanges are fucked, the people involved are hysterical, it's too manipulated and I make more money going long. However, if i was inclined to, XRP would be my #1 short target.

It's supply in circulation is centralized and controlled by the ripple people. Look at their website it says right there so they can manipulate their market cap at will.

Realistically, two years down the line, will Ethereum have addressed the shortcomings of Bitcoin and possibly become the leader in crypto? I mean the transaction backlog alone for BTC doesn't look good and it can really only get worse as more people start using, right?

I anticipate bitcoin will become more of a reserve, possibly the gold standard of crypto

It won't be moved around much but should retain its value

>> No.2094973

>>2094928
Realistically that time is in weeks. Have you seen the backlog? ETH transactions are increasing rapidly by the day too, because of how fast it is.

That sounds reasonable. This will sound larpy but from what Ethereum is actually capable of I'm imagining a cyberpunk near-future where ETH fuels a global grey market of interconnected systems and software.

>> No.2095256

"Can ethereum handle this growth rate? It depends how fast adoption and development moves in the coming years, but eth can currently handle around 20 transactions per second, which is close to 10x of bitcoin’s current capacity.

That means, even in its current form, it can at full capacity handle some 2 million transactions a day. "
