Since it's a 3x leveraged ETF, SOXL is highly sensitive to volatility so the idea is when volatility gets out of control I sell. The best way to track volatility in context of SOXL is a 200 daily moving average on its underlying SOXX. When the SOXX price goes under, get out of SOXL then when SOXX is back above the moving average, buy back in.
The theory here is price is very difficult to predict but volatility on the other hand is fairly easy.
I use SOXX/SOXL but the idea works just as well for QQQ/TQQQ, SPY/UPRO, etc. since what you are going for is to take advantage of the upside while avoiding the downside of the daily leverage rebalancing. In backtests as far back as is practical, this strategy outperforms both the underlying and the leveraged ETF by a wide margin.

impl vol is as it says on the lid: implied (based on the pricing of options). Near earnings, you might have no price movement, but impl vol will shoot up anyway.
