Contrary to the other anons here, options aren't all higher risk plays. If you play option strategies instead of just naked options, you can actually define your risk and potential reward fairly well. You can even make money when the market crabs.

As an example, here's a butterfly on TQQQ at 113/110/107. If I believed that TQQQ would be rangebound from 107 to 113.25, I could make up to a little over $500.

There's a few good resources for learning about them, I'd recommend the tastyworks guides though.

And for the love of god, don't trade anything you don't absolutely understand.

If you're not retarded they are. You can use them to alter your risk and profit profile. Think of an option as an insurance contract against volatility in the market.

You can also use them to create highly leveraged positions but I wouldn't recommend this unless you're sure of what you are doing, are managing the risks, and have some type of catalyst.

The real value though is the ability to change your risk profile and cash flows. I can use options to get an extra dividend every quarter, lock in my profits on a position, or even create a synthetic treasury bond. The possibilities are endless if you know what you're doing.
