So I had to use Bitcoin to buy Ethereum. Are all altcoins that way and based on Bitcoin?

Can you not buy altcoins directly (when the exchange does the bitcoin part for you that doesn't count)?

Currently, but as time goes on better Exchanges will develop

You can also buy some altcoins using ethereum

And Nexus is also developing its own network for its blockchain, but that wont be ready for a while

no you didn't, there are multiple USD/ETH exchanges. you're just stupid

Changelly and shapeshift both allow multi coin options. Not trading but it lets you use pivx to buy btc or dash to buy eth. Screw losing money changing from shitcoin to bitcoin constanlty

OP look at currency pairings here:

http://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/kraken/

anytime you see a pairing with USD, EUR, or GBP, that means you can buy those alts with those fiat currencies. coinbase is another where you can buy ETH or LTC with fiat currency.
