Since this is done at scale through yVaults the gas costs are minimized as you are only adding your liquidity to the vault.

YFI token gives governance rights and can be staked for rewards from generated fees via yTokens, currently in the form of yCRV tokens. There also currently is a YFI token burn mechanism for rewards that will almost certainly get removed for a pure staking model soon
