Yes, you need to read up. Options are "derivatives" which means they are contracts traded with securities (stocks, bonds, ETFs, etc.) as the underlying. Puts are "right to sell (stock, bond, etc.)" and calls are "right to buy (stock, bond, etc.)". Who do you buy or sell from? Someone who sells you that contract.
Stocks are not "converted" to options. But if there is a market to buy AND sell these contracts that is an options chain.
