In the case of a wire transfer, the dealer immediately sees the money in his bank account and knows that the money is good. As soon as he see the money in his account, he will ship out your metals.

There is nothing wrong with using personal checks. It takes about two or three business days for the dealer to receive the check, another day or two for the dealer to deposit the check, and another four days or so for the check to clear. After that, the dealer ships the bullion and it'll take another three or four business days for it to arrive. If you buy from a reputable dealer, you should not worry about being swindled so it's just a matter of waiting.

The Hunt brothers essentially their entire net worth into silver and they were still buying even when the price was sky high. When the commodities exchanges broke the contracts, allowing the Hunts' counterparties to pay the cash value of the futures instead of delivering silver bullion, the silver bubble broke and the Hunt brothers ate it.

I don't buy into the conspiracy theory that you mention. If anything, the US would fall back to a gold standard, not a silver standard. Back when the world was still using specie-backed money, it was the west that was on a gold standard and China (I don't know about the other Asian countries. I suspect that the east and southeast Asian countries followed China.) was on a silver standard.

Its the contract equivalent to 'unforeseen circumstance that is basically an act of God'. If the COMEX has tons of people scrambling to claim physical assets that don't really exist, they can nullify those contracts standing for delivery and pay them out in USD rather than ozt. This is of course, a death knell for the system, because it means you're not getting the metal you paid for, but rapidly devaluing clown money.
