I have no idea who is doing this and for what reasons other than money. This is the kind of thing we will find out years from now if it ever becomes public knowledge.
My guess is that TSLA is being targeted because:
1. Its valuation is pure hype, even before this year, since its fundamentals have been trash for ever. Which means FOMO is particularly strong since its literally a FOMO hype stock.
2. It started with a high stock price and high liquidity. This meant almost every hedge fund and bank was looking at it. Even internationally because of TSLA's contracts in Germany and China.
3. This coincides with the meme possibility of being added to other major indices.
You would literally need billions of dollars to attempt this.
