The LINK token literally is needed.

For the moment the network is growing without staking among DeFi projects which are nice to keep the network moving along, but staking/collateral/penalty payments will be very important in the future.

If you're using smart contracts that will settle to millions of dollars you're going to want the oracles who decide how the contract settles to have some skin in the game.
