The education system needs a massive overhaul. Schools know that students will get basically unchecked loans (which is absolutely fucking stupid. Taking out a 100k+ student loan is literally easier than buying a shitty used car). And, the schools jack up the rates in response.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the humanities and other general Ed classes like that. And, the humanities do have a typically left-leaning bias. Again, nothing wrong with that. Education is education and gathering different perspectives is important.

The problem comes when these classes are requirements for other degrees. STEM students don’t need sociology classes for the most part. Yet, they are required to take thousands of dollars of credits to move on to their actual major. Shit, even regular students don’t need this shit. I unironically took a sociology class that ended up being something remarkably obscure. Like, 75% of the class was studying women’s labor movement in Vietnam or some shit. Who the fuck needs that. Apparently I did, and it cost over $5k to do so.

The other problem is when schools get involved in the politics of education. I’d call myself a moderate socially. Not too far left leaning, not too far right leaning. Even then, it was hard to engage in class dialogues that were against the prevalent left-leaning ideologies. Don’t get wrong, I had teachers that were good at moderating an intellectual discussion in class and felt welcomed to have open discussions. But, more often than not, classrooms often felt like soapboxes and echo chambers. Students just parroting what the teachers want to hear. Teachers just parroting what the students want to hear. Too many times did I see opposing viewpoints shutdown without discussion.

I’m glad I got out when I did a few years ago. Seems like it’s only gotten worse
