>How do you feel about seeing investors, mostly younger people, turning to speculative trading to replace other forms of entertainment during the coronavirus lockdowns?

>Malkiel: I believe that for many of these people, it is a substitute for sports gambling. You know, in a way I am sympathetic. I don’t think there is anybody who devotes a life to studying and working on the stock market who doesn’t have something of a gambling instinct. I am the first to admit that I have gone to the horse races, I have sat at the tables at Las Vegas and Atlantic City, so I do not think there is anything wrong with gambling for entertainment. The problem that I see is that this is the diametric opposite to investing. For me, investing means buy and hold, as you said. The thesis of Random Walk was that you are much better off not buying individual stocks, but buying an index fund. To go and day trade and think that you are investing, that’s what I think is absolutely wrong and is likely to be simply disastrous for people. All the evidence is that day traders in general lose money. It’s not that they can’t make money in gambling, I’ve actually won from time to time. But over the long run, this is a losing proposition.

I bought nasdaq, made like 8% in 2 months

$2700 profit, with $475 'overnight funding' fees.

What even are these, I thought overnight funding charges were only small % charges if you're trading futures overnight. I bought NASDAQ, not a NASDAQ futures asset yet I still received charges as well as had my open position 'expire'.

Am I supremely retarded, what's going on here?

only daytrading gambling addicts and/or conspiracy theorists think dividends are a bad idea. its either a fear of opportunity costs ("I could double my money on pharma pump-and-dumps, so I'm losing money buying dividend stocks") or a belief in societal collapse ("Silver and handguns will be the currency of the future; your little shares and paper money will be worthless").
if your goal is passive investing, then dividend stocks are a worthwhile component.
i personally recommend selling wayyy over-the-market covered calls on them too, but that's just me

Read into the tanker sector, my man. It's a huge risk and the upsides are not that great. I say that as somebody who is balls deep into tankers. The divvy is nice now but won't last through Q3 (which is historically the worst quarter for tankers) unless there is another contango situation. Next step is the supercycle in 2022 and 2023 when the supply of ships dry up and the old ones are scrapped as needed. This will be a great time for tankers with probably large divvy. Up until then it can be a dry spell depending on the oil market.

Anyway, I haven't sold my shares yet although my gains today cover only 20% of the current loss on tankers. This might be All Time Low though but I am not going to bet on it. Will ride it out to the supercycle though.

don't buy into the "but the hedge funds bought a large share of the tankers" to much either. True, it can be a bullish signal, but the purchase could also just be part of a larger strategy as a hedge against another play or even just so people can short it.

real estate is in a tough spot
residential real estate has to deal with eviction holds, the financial situation of the average person has probably worsened well enough that less people are buying as well.
Commercial real estate is also dealing with shutdowns, which limit which business tenets can actually pay their rent, as well as some worries about remote work, and the shutting down of brick and morter stores in favor of online shopping.
Honestly I'm surprised it's not worse than it is.

Listen man, you've heard about fish oil, krill oil, and CBD oil, basedbean oil is going to be the next best thing. Its good for your heart and arthritis It's a powerful non-addictive pain reliever. It helps regrow your hair. It makes dicks hard and pussies wet, not to mention its household cleaning applications. You take a couple gallons of this stuff and it will clean out the drains in your sink and i use it to wash my toilet bowls. This stuff is the greatest stuff in history. That's why the smart money is accumulating the basedbeans now because once the masses understand the applications of basedbean oil it's going to go crazy.
