The Fed has been pumping a liquidity enema into the market and buying up the worst shit that leaks out. Normally the Fed is supposed to deal mostly in government securities and the loans it makes, but during the crash they announced they were going to start taking on some junk ETFs too (now expanded to buying corporate bonds as well). This essentially means that the Fed has taken on the role of the "greatest fool" to float the market according to the greater fool trading paradigm in which speculators jump at risky bullshit in the hopes that someone even dumber will buy it for more in the future. Technically, the Fed is party to the Hertz bankruptcy proceedings because they bought an ETF that includes Hertz.

When the Fed balance sheet contracts, it means that either they are pushing less liquidity into the market or they're pulling the bottom out of the market by stopping the "greatest fool" purchases. Those actions are what stopped the crash a few months ago, and what prevented a liquidity crisis in December/January. If the Fed backs off, the market will roll over and die.

Its more that the market is linked to the change in the balance sheet of the Fed.

Only new debt/assets bought by the Fed pumps the market, the past purchases don't have lasting effects. In other words, there seems to be a force pushing the markets down and the only thing stopping it is the Fed continuesly buying shit.

Not that the fed pushed the brakes a bit (curve is flattening), we see that the growth in the markets is stopping as well. This is very bearish in my opinion and substantiation for the "brrrr" and Jerome memes.

>Battle tested, hard-nosed, and, at times, known to be very blunt, the top executive of the largest and oldest independent iron ore mining company in the US has been called many things in an almost 40-year career spent from one end of the steel supply chain to the other. Fearful is not one of them.

>Although that remains the case, Lourenco Goncalves admits to harboring growing concerns earlier this year over the spread of Covid-19 and the ramifications of the global pandemic not only on Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.’s traditional iron ore operations, but also on the pending startup of a $1-billion, 1.9-million tonne-peryear hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in Toledo, Ohio and future plans and progress of Cliffs’ acquisition of Westchester, Ohio-based AK Steel.

>The all-stock transaction, completed on March 13, 2020, implied a total enterprise value of approximately $3.0 billion for AK Steel and immediately transformed Cliffs into one of the largest vertically integrated producers of value-added iron ore and steel products in North America. “I believe AK Steel is a diamond in the rough,” the chairman, president and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs commented on the acquisition. “And we will execute. Of course, this pandemic was not in the plan,” said Goncalves.

Market has been barely tethered to the underyling (the economy) for years. The reason for the crash was a liquidity crunch to service debts during shutdowns. As soon as the Fed initiated infinite printer works, the ONLY thing the market cared about was the status of the money printer.
That is why /pol/shits are such obnoxious noise in these threads. They want to make the markets somehow a reflection or scorecard for their shitty culture wars. Fear or embrace of the printer is what drives money back into (overvalued) stocks.

>This could actually be understood by them as well.
correlation not causation. I think normies have "BRRR" pretty deep in their heads. What they don't realize is that corporate profits leveled off in 2012 and the broad upward motion in equities is likely a function of credit expansion. When the FED is expanding its balance sheet it's effectively expanding credit, which is currently "propping up" the market. It is more likely that with the FED's "backstop" we have "returned to normal." Where we left off was what seemed like the end of the credit bubble.

The Fed makes or breaks the market right now. But it is all built on trust. What the Fed is doing is not part of their normal mandate and very very unsustainable. Not only is it unsustainable, it is also very bad for the economy in the long run.

It is bad because it leads to terrible distribution of wealth. There are only so much resources/manhours/cash and the free market makes sure that the right people and organisations get it to use it to add more value resulting in a growing healthy economy.

What we see now is the Fed deciding which companies have a right of existence by buying their worthless shit. This is often politically motivated (they'd rather save a company with many employees than little). In essence we in the West don't have a free market anymore but coroporate socialism.

We now have privatized profit but socialized losses. In the end the taxpayer pays up, either through inflation, decreasing purchasing power, higher tax burdens etc. etc. If the Fed and ECB keep buying worse and worse shit with our collective money, we could feel that for the coming 30 years in the form of an inefficient economy filled with zombie corps. A bit like the USSR in its last years.

In what sense do you mean? Theoretically the Fed has infinite cash sitting on the sideline of potentiality and it doesn't seem like the government is even going to try to stop them from eating up new types of assets that are closer and closer to direct stock purchases. If you meant from normal market participants, well there's the big meme on Buffet blasting off in his ejector seat while the retail bros day trade based on what letters come out of a Scrabble bag. Every story I've seen says that institutional investors have been highly reluctant to get back into the market, dragging their feet because fundamentals are trashed even while the Fed conjures a rally from thin air. Dave Portnoy is currently claiming to be the best market analyst simply for following the mantra that stocks only go up because standard analysts have been bearish and still remain skeptical.

Depends. The questions are:
- How long can the Fed keep this up?
- How long is the Fed willing to keep this up (they know that they cripple the next generations with absurd amounts of debt and bad assets/loans)
- How long will people keep faith in this?
And lastly:
- When will the forces pushing the market down become sufficiently large that there is no brrrr'ing to stop it?

Here in Europe we have the same problem. Slowly countries are starting to lose faith (Germany even went to court) as the ECB has been buying shit (outside of its mandate and against European regulation) for more than 5 years now. They are only buying time but it solves absolutely nothing. Especially not reduced consumer spending.

I bet they have some smart guys at the central banks but these mofo's aren't technocratic anymore than our politicians. I think we will see some large overhauls of central banks if the costs of these actions come out. Prepare for a large tax increase at least.

The media infrastructure in the US was infiltrated and bought out by the CIA in an effort labelled Operation Mockingbird. Of course, the core cadre of the CIA during its early years was comprised of Bonesmen from Yale who are all from the same oligarchical families that own the other components of the military-industrial complex, banking, etc. So not only is the top end of the media corporate infrastructure a caste of aristocratic monsters, but everything from local newstations to journalism schools were converted into propaganda distribution centers by the intelligence services which work for those aristocrats.

If the only force pushing it up is new money coming in from the fed, then the only force capable of pushing the market down would be people taking profits out, right?
It seems like neither force has an interest in a catastrophic collapse, but rather a protracted holding phase as fed money is siphoned out to be replaced with new retail/institutional.
Is the concern that the fed will withdraw too quickly?

It feels like the winning bet is the side that just sucks money out until it's all gone, by putting in some initial investment, pulling out any green, and maintaining some sort of short presence, as opposed to reinvesting and acquiring more of a ship that's taking on water

It's complex. I think what threw a wrench in the system is the meme that the economy was doing well before corona hit. It didn't. Both the Fed and ECB have been doing QE for a while and interest was low for years before corona hit.

Low interest and QE practically force institutions and consumers alike to take on too much debt and take too much risk. If you'd go back to the 90's and would tell them that there are companies that are taking on debt to buy their own stock they'd laugh at you. Think of how stupid that is.

The problem is that all these things mimic a good economy. We get rising stock markets and good results for companies (free money). And even with all this free money, companies still saw buying their own stock as a solid investment.

Our economy has been ill of a deadly hereditary disease and should structurally change for years now (interest near zero, investments down, increasing debt and reduced purchasing power are proof of this).

Corona has masked these problems. As they say: "never waste a crisis". All the abovementioned problems which have been swiped under the carpet can now be tied to Corona. In reality we are just memeing ourselves right now and that is why I am so bearish in this market. Corona is not the problem, just the catalyst. But yeah, try explaining that to the general populace.

I don't believe in a conspiracy by the way. The economic system we have is just too big and unwieldy. No single person or institution can change it at this point.

Curious what the next years will bring. But if the central bank policies do turn out bad (large chances they will) we might be looking at another lost generation not able to buy a house until all boomers are dead. Increased burdens, slowly later pensions with less money.

I think that is my biggest fear. A slowly disapearing middle class, increased tax burdens, less perks, shittier jobs and everything that comes with this (more depressed people and criminality). Fuck man, I'd rather have a flash crash and a reset. The people in charge rather have the status quo though.

Altogether, the ruling caste of the current world order is so wealthy that accruing more wealth is very difficult. These are the people who end up with all the wealth that gets transferred when a nation victorious in a war plunders the loser. These are the people who have been hoarding art, rare texts, classified patents, precious metals, and everything else with value for generations. They own governments and control the fates of countries.
The only thing their agendas are concerned with is power, specifically the power to control individuals, groups, and populations. Destroying the current market would not really impact their wealth because they own all the things with actual value rather than fiat toilet paper or bits on a digital ledger, but it would certainly provide an opportunity to plunge even more of the middle class into destitution and therefore greater reliance on the system of control through handouts, welfare, etc. The goal of their economic and market manipulations isn't to become more wealthy, but to turn everyone else into neo-feudal serfs.

>After 100 years, the Universal Stock Ticker is back in production. We’re proud to reintroduce you to a legendary symbol of Wall Street, unchanged from the days of Thomas Edison.

>Designed in the 19th-century, and now ticking again in the new millennium, the Universal Stock Ticker is capable of working if connected to the original 1870s transmission lines. However, today it will print your favorite stock quotes from the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, or Mutual Funds, direct from the internet.

>In the 1870s, the Universal Stock Ticker represented what could be considered the very first mass-produced electronic printer. Anyway, I would lower the greedy bar. Read into this phenomenon and understand it more. That way you have a little bit of an early warning system. I also check the news items or press releases of the ECB and Fed. They often hint to measures before they implement them.

That's how I knew the ECB was going to fuck Europe over and we will have monetary financing of member states this or next year. Fed also hinted at buying corporate bonds which was a clear buy signal.

This can't be the endgame, it's too pointless. What's the point of running the world that is slowly dying due to massive overpopulation, and encironmental degredation?

what point is there if they slip up and it causes a mass shake up of the system, or if the system completely collapses? All that precious metal, patents, and land will be completely useless, they need people to farm to maintain their food supply and the comforts they'd be accustomed to and they become dependent on their security to not just shoot them, and rule themselves.

It's not a big ploy (although there are bad actors). Over the past 100 years we kept adding shit to the economic and financial system. It's a bureaucratic juryrigged, heavy and slow piece of shit at this point. As I said, nobody can stop the freight train. No president, Fed chairman or Bezos/Soros type can influence what is happening right now beyond mending small wounds and keeping the train in its tracks.

Only a large reset event could possibly do it. Until then we will see stranger and stranger shit happening to keep it afloat. Now masked by Corona but that won't last forever.
