Futures are contracts traded on something that will happen in the future.
So red futures means the people expect the market to go down in the future and green ones means traders are optimistic about the future.
Futures can swing from -1% to +2% and back to -2% and the market can still open at +.1%.

They do not mean too much. Its just a vibe check for most of us non-future traders.

you can fight total war at a border region or a DMZ and go balls out and win. india just fucking sucks, doesn't have enough arms or men or willpower. china could easily crush india, at the border and in full conflict. this will simmer down just like india vs. pakistan last time. indians just want to do IT jobs, call centers jobs and have more kids. they don't have a fighting spirit, and neither do the chinks. but the chinks are basically slaves so they'll fight because they'll get punished for not fighting.

>it's probably more complicated than that
As someone moderately educated on the subject, I can give you my take.
American intervention was based on a delusion: they believed there are two Vietnams. North Vietnam and South Vietnam were treated as separate countries. Thus, the US declared it was intervening to protect a sovereign country ("South Vietnam") from an invader ("North Vietnam").
In reality, there were two states, but one country. The Republic of Vietnam (South) and Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North). These two states both laid claim to the exact same land and country. Neither considered themselves north or south. They were both just Vietnam.
The US intervened to protect a parallel state with no popular legitimacy from a state with broad popular support. The RVN struggled to the end because it was corrupt and hated by the populace. Most of the Viet Cong recruits were from the South, which is something that's not really talked about. We painted the Viet Cong as a northern force, to reinforce our narrative of an "invading" north. The US basically came to serve as a mercenary force for a group of entrenched, corrupt elites, bunkered down in the South. For that matter, the RVN didn't even solidly control the South. They just solidly controlled the major cities and airports. Periodically they reached into rural areas, but could never hold them without constant American assistance.
For the US to "win", it would've had to continuously occupy the entirety of Vietnam on behalf of the RVN. This is something Americans were unwilling to do. It would've cost too much and achieved too little.

Thats like saying the SU did not really lose the cold war because they could have nuked the whole world and gotten a draw.
Or saying North Korea didnt lose the Korean war because the Americans didnt occupy their whole nation.
Or saying the SU didnt get fisted in Afghanistan because they could, again, have nuked the whole place.

A war is based on objectives. You fulfill these objectives, you win, you do not, you lose.
The US' objective in Vietnam was to keep the commies out. They could not fulfill that, they lost.
The US objective in Korea was to hodl the line. They fulfilled that, they won. The commies tried to conquer it all, they could not, so they lost.

Americans LARPing that they somehow did not lose the Vietnam war is pathetic desu..

and if i want historical background on something, i go on JSTOR and find books/articles. finding historical background is easier than reading about current events. current events have too much noise/misinformation about them. once 10 or 20 years passes, the dust settles a bit.

Prof jobs are the opposite of cushy. And you need at least 3 postdocs nowadays before you even get to apply for the prof positions, which are constantly contested 1000:1. By the time you do your 3 postdocs, you'll need to do 2 more and compete 10000:1. Even when you get hired, your pay is basically minimum wage despite a massive workload for the first 5 to 10 years. Only then do you get paid what most fresh college grads with 2.7 GPAs get right out the gate. Of course, if you keep at it for 20 more years and apply yourself by starting your own institute and organizations in parallel to your work, and get extremely lucky to gain the necessary renown to get there, you might actually be paid well (top-tier stem profs can get near 7 figs in that case, but an upper bound around 150k is more normal; usually non-stem get paid less, too).

Nearly any non-STEM field is a pyramid scam. There are no jobs other than being a college professor in 9/10 fields, and in the ones where there are jobs, there aren't nearly enough. The humanities and similar fields need to return to their position in the 19th and early 20th centuries where it was just hobby learning for the rich with time and money to burn. There is a lot of interesting shit to learn at a university, but there is no money in any of it and it only makes sense to study if you are wealthy with odd interests.

Yep, I feel like the days of the obsession with degrees will be dying soon. The vast majority of even STEM degrees are dead end jobs, albeit well-paying. The only places we are really advancing in are certain fields of science and medicine. Animals are for fags and if you do any thing with a bio degree other than medicine you are a retard. I feel like I should backpedal a bit, I said that 9/10 humanities are scams, but about 1/2 of "STEM" are as well. Anything that is pure mathematics or research into shit that has no effect on society is also a crock of shit that is only good for providing new jobs for professors. Like botany, most of physics, evolution type of shit. Sure, you learned about how things happened and how they work, but what good does that do the world?
