Man you would do yourself a massive service by researching this a bit. Long story short it's silicon valleys ETH 2.0 who pulled off a proof of stake staking based chain that allows for hundreds / thousands of public nodes. (This is what Ethereum has been trying to accomplish for years and still is yet to do, already completed 1 or 2 years in advance by Harmony).

It's a smart contract platform similar to what Ethereum 2.0 is planning to be, which has been hyped about for years but isn't here yet and probably won't be for a year or longer.

It solves scalability issues with the proof of stake algorithm with sharding (splits up the network into groups of validators processing transactions independently, which makes everything faster). They do 1000 transactions per second for each shard they have, and they can add as many shards as needed. currently they have 4, so allows for 4000tps. current Ethereum is about 15 (not 15 thousand, 15).

The token is needed to pay nodes with gas (transaction fees), and to get returns on staking (locking up the token with validators which helps secure the network by locking up supply so a single entity can't own too much).

dApps built on Ethereum can port over to Harmony as it's build to be compatible. For example, binance has a stablecoin which just switched over. More and more should be doing this now that everything is fully live.
