Let's say we isolated the old and the sick so the rest could get back to work (let's say we isolate anyone over 65 and anyone with any comorbidity).
There would of course still be a lot of deaths among the young and healthy, and we can even get a decent estimate. Two questions for you:
1) What is your guess at this number?
2) What number would you think "too high", i.e. lockdowns would be worth it?

I'll give you the answer this time. It would be about 100k-250k deaths, if we do your plan of isolating the old and the sick and stick to it.

IFR: 1.2%
% of Covid-19 deaths under 65: 25%
% of Covid-19 deaths without comorbidity: up to 25%
US Population: 330,000,000
If everyone were infected, 330M * 0.012 = 3,960,000 would die, or about 4 million. Of these, 25% would be under 65, or about 1 million. Of these, deaths with no comorbidity would be up to 25%, which is 250,000 young, healthy Americans dead with your plan. Lower that number because not everyone will be infected (maybe only 70%-80%) and because the number of deaths with no comorbidity may be lower than 25%, so say 100k-250k (max) young, healthy Americans dead if we let Coronavirus spread wild but (successfully) isolate all old and sick.

Does that sound tolerable?

I don’t want to come off as too gloomy. Millions of Americans won’t die from covid simply because we will resume the lockdowns. The only question is how many infections we get, we’ll get 1.2% of those as deaths, and that only depends on the amount of social distancing. Unmitigated, the virus spreads quickly enough that it reaches the whole population within a year, or at least as many as it can before hitting herd immunity at 60-80%.
So America will see 100k (now) to 4 million dead in a year, depending on exactly one factor: how stubborn Americans will be banging their heads against the Corona wall, trying to reopen.

That's not really how it works, but yeah high VIX (hell, even 22 is pretty damn high) means that there is a lot of anticipated possible downside and people are either short or hedging hard with puts. Remember, VIX is a mean reverting indicator, it will seek out a low level in times of normalcy. Being this high means stuff is still not even close to normal.

In general, the easiest and dumbest indicators are best. Setting VIX > 30 as a trigger point to sell everything would have caught 2 actual recessions and two false alarms. Thinking about selling MRO. Take my 15-16% gains and roll the whole nut into more of GE while it's cheap as shit.
