No, and it says so on each bill. Utah passed a state law allowing the voluntary acceptance of alternate currencies. These are legal in Utah only, and only at shops voluntarily participating in the program.

Still if you live outside Utah there's nothing stopping you from using these to settle private debts, but no stores are going to accept them outside of coin shops and WE BUY GOLD pawn shops. It's also a nice proof-of-concept for the US Treasury to follow - maybe we should suggest that?

Seriously speaking, I was always advised by collectors in my family to buy 10ozt bars or less. Reason was that 10ozt bars were generally the smallest bar a foundry would take at a reasonable premium while 10ozt bars also generally being the largest bar most collectors can afford at one time.

It was old-timey advice, I just didn't know it when I started stacking. I see a lot of kilo bars and 100ozt bars floating around and my LCS says the biggest bar he'd buy from a customer is a kilo. Still, you won't lose your money buying 10ozt bars exclusively and the premium is generally lower than 1ozt bars or 5ozt bars.
