1965 minimum wage 1.25/hour
1965 gold price $35 per troy ounce
40 work hours a week x 50 work weeks a year = 2000 working hours per year
2000 working hours x $1.25 minimum wage = $2500 annual salary
$2500 salary / $35 per troy ounce gold = 71 ounces of gold

If you wanted to buy a one troy ounce American Gold Eagle coin right now it would cost you $1850. If you could buy at spot price, the dollar value of that 1965 yearly salary would only buy 1.5 ounces of gold.

If you had 71 ounces of gold right now at spot price would have $121,000 which more than I made as a software developer last year.
