Don't ruminate on this shit, the best time to start is now.

You clearly can't control yourself on this, so my suggestion is to take the "cold turkey" approach on this. That is, don't rely on your self-discipline and rely on controlling your environment. This means:
- Uninstall Steam and give away the account to someone you know;
- Remove other possible vidya related distractions in your house/basement.

Now what I predict with this is that you'll spend even more time on the internet browsing shit... so you'll need to use apps that block websites during a certain time period and get down on focusing on shit.

Again, the trick is to control your environment, not to rely on your self-discipline. Good luck!

this is why i gave up video games after i turned 21. It was a steady decline because i always felt worthless and like i was wasting my time playing them when i could be learning something fulfilling, which made me find it hard to play.

since then i've learned two languages and achieved a lot of my personal goals. Couldn't imagine anything worse than waking up at 30 and not having achieved these things yet due to playing video games in spare time. how depressing.

The problem with games is they too easily become a time sink. especially if you are really into one. It can be difficult to pull away and it will break your routine of daily practice on things and its difficult to get momentum back when that happens.

The only way you grow (in the human sense) in gaming is learning how to be patient with yourself, and the sad thing is that you could learn to be patient with yourself by doing something more productive like learning a skill. Instead of having something to show for your invested time like the ability play beautiful melodies on an instrument or draw an evocative picture you have this detailed knowledge of the specific patterns and input on a disposable light box. It's like spending time memorizing the dimensions of a plastic toy only to throw it away and do the same thing again with another toy the next month.

no. that'd indeed be worthless but would also be boring as fuck. as long as you really enjoy the game, it is giving and teaching you something new. video games become an issue because it's a straightforward escape to choose instead of facing real problems. hardcore gamers reach a point where games give them nothing plus not even enjoyable, but still more comfortable than facing real life.

as long as you genuinely enjoy gaming, you should go ahead. once you just load the game up hoping it will make you feel better is the time to go and self inspect over playing a game.

Says the guy who doesn't capitalize a sentence or use punctuation.

Funny thing is that I was in all honors English classes throughout high school. In third grade, I was reading, comprehending, and writing equivalent of a twelfth grader. Read through 300+ page books when classmates were trying to middle through "Hooked on Phonics".

Pretty sure years of Channing it up helped to demolish my grammar.

Slowed down reading once I hit high school and then let it drain out over time. It's been 15 years since graduating hai skool. Slowly picking up reading again, but I've learned that if you don't use it, you definitely lose it.

One thing I have remaining is spelling and understanding not used in normal conversation words, so friends, coworkers and acquaintances have asked me, "how do you spell x?" and "what does y mean?".

That's exactly what I think too, and what I'm trying to do. You can be a writer THROUGH the internet. There's plenty of jobs where you can earn lots of money writing articles or copy, especially if you are a native English speaker.

Good copywriters can make a high six-figure income. There's plenty of courses to learn this from people who have already made it.

Gaming CAN be a good hobby but only if it's a means for you to be social, make friends, or have something to do with them sometimes.

Hanging with your bros to play games and be competitive from time to time is just like watching sports, playing cards, etc. Just a hobby like any other. In fact, it can encourage you to work your ass off and earn money because setting a nice gaming lair (huge screen, a comfy sofa for your living room to hang out, etc) is expensive as fuck.

There's a difference between playing games socially and being a game addict loner neet. You can play games as an adult or as a manchild.

But yea honestly there are better things you can do with your time.

I don't know why, but I'll tell you this.

This site has nothing to offer anybody. There is no quality content here you cannot get more quickly and efficiently elsewhere. This is an addiction which reduces your productivity, attention span, and free time. You are becoming more bitter, narrow minded, haughty, and old. Leave now and block this site. There is nothing here but slow, lonely suicide.

People do not have arguments here. Posters do not engage one another on key points, they nitpick with greentext and mock each over. Nobody is interested in the truth; people are battling for fleeting moments of superiority. Active commenters are loud jackasses who tumble into one internet fight after another, anxiously keeping ten tabs open to ensure they keep the last word in all of them. An insightful post is one in ten thousand, and no matter how hard you filter this place you are still searching for diamonds in a garbage dump.

This place is not making you happy. You are not having fun. You are not gathering stories to tell, learning, or growing as a person. Instead you chuckle every thirty minutes and are occasionally spurred to masturbation by libidinal posts or pictures. You are addicted to readily available information and pressure free social interaction. This place is slowly poisoning you with misogyny, narcissism, a false dichotomy surrounding normalfags, and insecurity.

>You just have to gun it for management. It's the only way out anyway after your thirties.

Fuck, I was afraid that would be the answer. But unfortunately it seems to me one of the best ways out, despise all the gaslighting that I hear from several managers (and certain US-centric places like Hacker News) saying that "you should only go to to management if you want to deal with people" and "staying as an IC is also a legitimate option and you'll earn about the same as in management".

What other options are on the table, for an anti-social introvert like me?

>> No.18841608

>>18841458
I read Hacker News and see the management posts too. Some do say remaining an IC is ok but they're in the minority even there. Those are the huge autists enjoying their job in the first place that can't see past it. For every autist like that there are 10+ who just get crushed and spitted out.
Anti-social introverts will always be at the bottom of the food chain unless you snap out of it. The real white collar job for them is proper R&D (any industry), engineering, or any kind of "analyst" I guess.

You just have to change your mindset and be more open-minded. It's a skill to learn like any other. Have genuine interest in human affairs, and cultivate interests of your own. Don't be a mindless NPC. Never read it myself, but How to Win Friends and Influence People by Carnegie essentially.

If you have low-level autism like assburgers, then it might be beyond you and I don't know. I could probably get a SPD diagnosis, but thankfully I don't suffer from any autism related impediments, and nobody at work would suspect anything.

Either way, it's a given that I have to actively dwell into office politics and "social skills" in the context of a workplace. I'm willing to work on this, but it's really fucking dissapointing to think that even in tech you're not safe from this bullshit.

Maybe my "social butterfly" is that very same baseline you speak of.

Either way, we both agree that social skills >= technical skills and that moving on from being an IC is necessary, either by being an Engineering Manager, a Product/Project Manager or whatever social skills heavy role. Tech truly isn't a place for the introvert anymore.

Imagine if this could be combined with more facettes in life, instead of just language. Unfortunately most games (even more complex ones like Paradox titles) deal with ideas like economy only on a relatively superficial level...

This. Not every game is created equal in terms of its ability to help improve a lot of the characteristics that people typically associate with intelligence. Most games though, even ones without a meaningful benefit on your cognition, could be used for totally detached relaxation which is fundamental for peak performance. Most people don't use or even think of them that way, but if you have a really stressful and demanding occupation, video games are a great way of "turning it off" sometimes.

When you don't need to totally relax, but you don't have any better opportunities present (like if business is slow) you can play games that are a little less relaxing, but also more efficient at keeping your cognition sharp. Again though, most people aren't really using games as a useful tool. Instead they're treating them as a "risk free" way of feeling meaningful/achieving things because our economy is such a clusterfuck.

I quit about 6 months ago and realized that ecommerce/online marketing is basically just a video game that most people suck at and is really really easy to be mediocre at and still get results/be profitable. Its a game with a really low barrier to entry, pretty low skillfloor and really high skillcap, which is basically what every competitive gamer wants in a game (fresh blood being introduced to the ladder, payoff for actually getting gud, etc). I found out what I craved from games wasn't the game itself, it was the competition and feeling of being better than other people at stuff. Single player games never interested me

Im working a trade during the day because I make like $40/hr+ without any living expenses most of the time (Im flown back and forth to remote jobsites). The + is because some jobs have contracts where I get an extra $4/hour, or 13% lump sum bonus, stipend, etc.

I've been dabbling in lots of stuff including private labeling and dropshipping (dropshipping is pretty shit, but pretty easy to make some starting capital to break into actually making your own brand, which is way more scaleable and more profitable at scale). Dropshipping/private labeling are also really good for building an email list that you can use to shill more stuff. Breaking even or losing a little bit of money doesn't matter very much once you realize you have that customer on your mailing list forever (and not only is email free, the conversion rates are way higher than traditional advertising). I also set up what is going to be an ad revenue/affiliate marketing site that's focused on organic SEO growth early on rather than paid traffic (going fairly well actually, Im ranking above sites like forbes and sports illustrated, getting snippets, etc for some of my articles).

I told myself I would quit my job when I was making more from my side businesses than my real job, but honestly working my day job just feels like a waste of time and like I'm losing out on potential money, but going from $120k/yr to like $45k/yr (roughly what I'd be making if I quit my job and stayed at the same level) feels really risky

All the other stuff can be copied/ripped off pretty easily (literally anyone could start selling my product, and DMCA takedown requests arent instant), but even if someone copies my store exactly, but they can't copy my ad pixel research without dumping a ton of money into adspend. The way fb/google/etc work is that they start off giving you broad generalized traffic, then slowly optimize it according to the user's behaviours/interests/demographics, to (in theory) give you better and better traffic that's already proven to resonate well with your ad creatives and store/sales funnel.

That feeling never goes away, you just gotta remember that most people doing most things are doing them poorly and there's no magic. Its really not that hard to beat them, at least in some aspects. Even major companies do things really poorly and can be easily beaten on certain pain points for possible customers/clients just by virtue of actually trying and giving a fuck. Take for instance Amazon. No, you can't beat their 2 day shipping (although right now you feasibly could because they've temporarily removed the 2 day shipping option). But can you beat them in the sense that if a customer has an issue or question that they can get an answer from a real person within minutes? Absolutely.

Can you beat major corporation's branding and public image? No. But if you had a restaurant could you make better ads than pic related, or run a more personal/charming social media presence? Absolutely, this ad could be put together by most kids in junior high, and its not good by any measure other than the fact that the creative includes the letters "KFC" in it
