Another thing is that increasing dividend in these times is not necessarily a good thing: it's a good strategy to attempt to stabilize stock price which means it's a worse buying opportunity than usual. Moreover you don't necessarily know if it's going to be sustained throughout.
Finally, I'll repeat the above for emphasis: you're arguing that ONE POINT ONE PERCENT dividend is worth it (6% above the ~1% it was giving before, look it up if you thought AAPL was giving 6% + 1% now as it's really not).

I FOMO'd into a few when it was $480 so I'm still up overall, but I strongly considered selling when it hit $800 and then convinced myself not to because, while it seemed high I just figured it would sort of sit there for a while and I'm not really sure what my core investing strategy and goals actually are so I think I was anxious that I wouldn't see that green percentage number each day if I sold them.

You're comparing 0% dividend with ~2-3% dividend. You should be comparing ~2-3% with 20% yoy (that's an extreme scenario by the way, a 5% yoy is much more standard) with ~10-20% at 0% (that's a lower bound, realistically you expect an increase as well).
You will see that you can never catch up to the latter with the former, and that the difference is so wide (for the same reason s&p+dividend beats s&p) that you should be fine getting into companies with high yield that recently cut dividends so long as you believe they'll survive under the assumption that dividends will return in at most 2 years.

i'm also allocating risk. i'd rather have companies with better free cash flow, lower payout ratio and consistent dividend growth than have to worry about future cuts.

I'd rather have lower starting but faster growing, safe, income stream than a higher yield, more volitile and risky stream.

The goal is to have a safe retirment, even if its less than what I could get if I put everything on MO for its 8% yield right now

You can have super-safe 5% even in normal times, here those same super-safes are discounted yet giving the same dividend per share (that's why it's 10, 15, 20% -- they're not struggling but their stocks are down due to the generic market selloff). At a rate of 1%, I'd much rather go with a growth stock instead. Again, the comparison basis is not the same as the one you presented (s&p500 are "stable" stocks as opposed to growth stocks).
If you're 5 years or less to retirement, then nothing I said above applies quite as well: while I maintain that you could get 10% in perfect safety, you shouldn't be at a point in life where you're thinking of relying on that for your retirement. But if you're any further from retirement, you should be looking at these discounted super-dividend stocks or at growth stocks that might rocket soon in relation to corona.

You're thinking of futures and not accounting for the fact futures buyers can't actually accept delivery which tanks futures prices near expiry beyond the actual "fair" price.

I'm not all that familiar with these, I really like TNP and DHT so I definitely recommend them but you'll have to do your diddly yourself to compare to TNK and EURN. I heard EURN is pretty solid but not TNK. People also generally liked STNG last I checked.
