If you can literally do everything on your own, or at least get a buddy to help with the more hard labor parts like transmission and motors, you can do something with it. Trick is to know how to find the cheap deals: car being sold for really cheap with only a minor fix needed. Also, put on your yamulka and jew, jew, jew your way down as much as possible

Your better off learning to fix them. Brake jobs and timing belts are easy and can be done in your garage. If you are computer and electrical literate you can diagnose check engine light issues. If you want to flip used cars you will need to learn how to fix everything.

check state law. you need a dealer license to sell more than a certain number of cars per year. also if you live in a state where cars rust it's not possible. you have to buy rust free cars out of state and ship them in which incurs extra levels of government regulation.

Hey Anon, I actually did this about a decade ago in Texas at in person auctions. It was a wild trip and hell of a lot of fun. Here's my advice -

1) The cars you want are impounds / seized. Look at the lists of available cars for auction. Pick out ones that are a newer year, as they have a better chance of not being wrecks, and being mechanically sound. My strategy was buying newer model cars that looked clean. Most of the dealers at the auction won't touch them. They want scrap or cars for repair, and chances are the nicer cars are going to fetch a bit more - but the margins can still be great.

2) Get a good mechanic friend. Post on craigslist for under the table jobs. When you get a car, if it doesn't run perfect, and it's beyond your scope, give them a call.

3) Have cash. I would bring $10k in cash to every auction. If you don't have a starting stack, you can't do this.

4) Look up the relevant laws for where you are. Some of the more red states have very few. I'm in Ontario now, and it's not possible for me here.
