overproduction happens bc at a certain point overaccumulation relative to profit (aka a falling rate of profit) leads to the total profit no longer rising. Capitalists stop investing, and therefore overproduction - a capitalist crisis.

The only way to fix this crisis is by systematically destroying the value of existing capital (plants, machines, employees) in order to cut costs and therefore restore profitability.

Crises of overproduction (unique to capitalism) are bad precisely because millions upon millions of people become laid off/homeless/destitute, etc. bc of the need of capitalism TO RESTORE PROFITS.
